MOSCOW (Reuters) – Vyacheslav Volodin, the speaker of Russia’s State Duma, asserted on Friday that the United Kingdom must return funds that it has transferred to Ukraine from Russian assets, which he labeled as an illegal gift intended to support Ukraine’s military operations.
Volodin’s comments followed statements from Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, who announced that Ukraine had successfully received an initial installment of approximately $1 billion from Britain, derived from the assets that had been frozen by western nations.
According to Volodin, “The transfer of Russian funds to Ukraine by Britain represents a severe breach of international law. They will be required to return the resources they are currently distributing,” as reported by the press service of the Duma.

Furthermore, Volodin expressed that this action could lead to a significant decline in trust towards Britain’s financial infrastructure. He emphasized that the situation erodes the fundamental principle of property rights, a cornerstone on which the global financial system is constructed.
