Ryan Seacrest and Sister Launch Children’s Book Celebrating Imagination

Ryan Seacrest, widely recognized for his role as host of Wheel of Fortune, has an extensive background in television, having previously hosted American Idol and the annual Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rocking Eve special, along with the weekly radio show American Top 40. Recently, he has teamed up with his sister, Meredith Seacrest Leach, who serves as the executive director of the Ryan Seacrest Foundation. This organization builds broadcast media centers in children’s hospitals, providing young patients with creative outlets for expression. Together, they have authored a picture book titled The Make-Believers, beautifully illustrated by Bonnie Lui. In a recent Zoom conversation with PW, Seacrest and Leach shared insights about their sibling dynamic, the impact of imagination, and fond childhood memories that shaped this creative endeavor.

Inspiration Behind the Book

Ryan: The concept for our book stems from two principal sources. First, it reflects the imaginative roles we played as children, staging various performances to entertain our family. Secondly, it was influenced by my experiences meeting children in pediatric hospitals across the country. Witnessing their incredible imaginations inspired me deeply. This book is a celebration of that creativity and ambition inherent in children.

Meredith: Indeed, our childhood was filled with imaginative play. There were times Ryan would take on the persona of Bon Jovi, while I embodied Madonna. My daughter, who is now five, also has a rich imaginative play life. It’s inspiring to witness the boundless creativity that young children possess, and I cherish the make-believe moments we share together.

The Collaborative Process

Meredith: Growing up, Ryan and I had a wonderfully smooth relationship. Our six-year age difference meant we rarely bickered; instead, we enjoyed playing together. As a big brother, Ryan always included me in his activities, whether that was making creative videos or performances. Today, our collaboration through the Ryan Seacrest Foundation continues in that same spirit of cooperation and mutual respect.

Ryan: Meredith, you’ve described it perfectly. I’ve always felt a protective bond toward you, and as we stepped into adulthood, I remained curious about your surroundings and experiences. Our relationship has been fulfilling in every sense.

Writing the Book

Ryan: We began with a conceptual framework for the story and characters. Though we aren’t seasoned children’s book authors, we collaborated closely with our editor to refine our ideas into what is now published. Meredith, would you add to that?

Meredith: Absolutely. We started with broad ideas, then worked together to craft the narrative. We are fortunate to have the backing of Simon & Schuster, whose expertise and our talented illustrator, Bonnie Lui, really brought our words to life.

Imagination in a Digital Age

Ryan: The timing for a book like The Make-Believers feels right. Today’s children have technology and information at their fingertips from an early age, which can overshadow their imaginative play. This book encourages children to dive deep into their dreams and creative thoughts, emphasizing that imagination is still relevant.

Meredith: With the prevalence of digital devices, it is crucial to remind children—and parents—to engage in imaginative play. By encouraging boredom and creativity, even simple items can transform into tools for imagination. We hope our book motivates families to put down their phones and collaborate in creative play.

Key Takeaways for Children

Meredith: The essence of our book lies in the power of imaginative play. I often tell my daughter that even if she doesn’t recall her nighttime dreams, there are dreams she can create while awake. Those aspirations can lead to real achievements. Reflecting on Ryan’s journey, he once pretended to be Casey Kasem, and now he finds himself in that very role on American Top 40.

Ryan: Children might not grasp the significance of visualization or manifestation, but its impact is profound. Even at a young age, my passion for counting down songs was a reflection of something deeper that later influenced my professional path.

Future Collaborations

Ryan: Our focus remains on the Ryan Seacrest Foundation and the ongoing establishment of media centers in pediatric hospitals. While we may consider more projects in the future, our current priority is to make a positive impact through our existing initiatives.

Meredith: We are excited to announce new Seacrest Studios opening in our hometown of Atlanta and in New Orleans, among other locations. Through this work and our book, we aim to inspire families. Imaginative play is ageless, and we hope to encourage everyone to engage in it.

The Intersection of Luck and Imagination

Ryan: The concept of luck in Wheel of Fortune doesn’t contrast with our book’s theme. If anything, they align—both embody the spirit of dreaming and believing in possibilities. It’s a show that inspired me as a child and, like with our book, emphasizes the importance of imaginative aspirations.

Meredith: This book is a sweet celebration of imagination. We hope it finds a place on bookshelves, encouraging families to share stories and dreams together.
