Qualcomm Introduces Snapdragon 8 Elite Mobile Chipset at Snapdragon Summit 2024

During the Snapdragon Summit 2024, Qualcomm showcased its latest mobile chipset, the Snapdragon 8 Elite. While the company highlighted impressive benchmark scores and performance claims—such as a reported 40% increase in GPU speed—questions remain about how these technical enhancements will translate into improved user experiences for Android device owners.

Qualcomm recognizes that impressive statistics alone do not convey the full picture, and members of the company took the opportunity to discuss the practical advantages of the Snapdragon 8 Elite during a roundtable interview with TechRadar.

Chris Patrick, Senior Vice President of Qualcomm’s Mobile Handset division, provided insights into the chipset’s gaming capabilities. “Gaming is one use case that truly tests a smartphone chipset’s capabilities, utilizing nearly all available processing resources,” he noted. Patrick emphasized the enhanced performance after testing the Oryon CPU integrated into the Snapdragon 8 Elite, stating, “The difference between playing a game that struggles with frame rendering versus the smoother experience we’ve achieved is significant. Now, gaming feels seamless, with no lag, even when pushing the device to its limits in terms of detail.”

The specifications of the Snapdragon 8 Elite highlight these advancements, with notable upgrades aimed at providing a more efficient gaming experience.

Patrick further discussed improvements in web browsing, a common activity for smartphone users. “While browsing may seem outdated, it’s essential for mobile phone users who regularly interact with websites,” he explained. “With the Snapdragon 8 Elite, it’s no longer necessary to rely on mobile versions of web pages. Even complex, resource-intensive desktop sites will load with ease, ensuring that applications powered by web engines will perform responsively and without delay. This improvement is set to be highly beneficial to users.”

Shahin Farahani, Qualcomm’s Senior Director of Product Management, also shared his views on what the Snapdragon 8 Elite brings to the table. “Several upgrades are clear and impactful. This chipset allows for higher generative AI resolution—an increase from 512 x 512 to 1024 x 1024 pixels, quadrupling the detail available.”

“Additionally, the Snapdragon 8 Elite offers remarkable power efficiency,” Farahani added. “For example, the GPU operates at a 40% greater efficiency while gaming, which translates into significantly extended battery life. While benchmarks are important, they only tell part of the story.”

In summary, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite promises enhanced gaming experiences, smoother web interactions, and improved battery performance through superior CPU and GPU efficiency. These advancements are intended to elevate the overall user experience.

As for the devices that will feature this new chipset, confirmed models include the Xiaomi 15 and Honor Magic 7, with anticipated future releases such as the Samsung Galaxy S25 and OnePlus 13 likely to adopt the Snapdragon 8 Elite as well. Consumers can look forward to seeing if these upcoming Android offerings can compete with Apple’s flagship iPhones in terms of performance.
