Qualcomm has taken a significant step in the artificial intelligence landscape by acquiring a majority stake in MovianAI Artificial Intelligence Application and Research JSC, as announced on Tuesday. MovianAI, previously part of VinAI Application and Research JSC, is now a distinct entity following a split from its parent company, VinAI, which is a subsidiary of the Vietnamese conglomerate Vingroup. Qualcomm’s acquisition includes a 65 percent ownership interest, although the financial specifics of the transaction have not been publicly disclosed. This strategic move is aimed at accelerating and enhancing Qualcomm’s capabilities in generative AI research and product innovation.

Qualcomm Acquires MovianAI

In an official news release, Qualcomm detailed its acquisition of the Vietnamese AI firm. MovianAI was founded in November 2024, emerging from the restructuring of VinAI into two focused entities. The new company specializes in AI research and development with a charter capital of nearly $9 million (approximately Rs. 77 crore).

Qualcomm has maintained a collaborative relationship with the Vietnamese tech ecosystem for over two decades, working to develop solutions across various fields like 5G, AI, Internet of Things (IoT), and automotive technology. Alongside the acquisition, Qualcomm has also announced that Hung Bui, VinAI’s founder and CEO who has experience at Google DeepMind, will be joining its team, which highlights the integration of high-level talent into the corporation.

This acquisition is a pivotal component of Qualcomm’s strategy to augment its generative AI capabilities significantly. MovianAI is expected to play a crucial role in accelerating the development of AI applications for a range of products, including smartphones, personal computers, and advanced software-defined vehicles.

Jilei Hou, Qualcomm’s senior vice president of engineering, emphasized the importance of this acquisition by stating, “This acquisition underscores our commitment to dedicating the necessary resources to R&D that makes us the driving force behind the next wave of AI innovation. By bringing in high-caliber talent from VinAI, we are strengthening our ability to deliver cutting-edge AI solutions that will benefit a wide range of industries and consumers.”

Hung Bui expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “We are ready to contribute to Qualcomm’s mission of making breakthroughs in fundamental AI research and scale them across industries, including smartphones, PCs, software-defined vehicles, and more. Our team’s expertise in generative AI and machine learning will help accelerate the development of innovative solutions that can transform the way we live and work.”
