Federal corrections authorities have determined that Mohamed Al Ballouz, a convicted murderer, will be housed in a men’s prison despite identifying as a female. Al Ballouz, who has adopted the name Levana, received a life sentence in December, with eligibility for parole set at 25 years.
In 2022, Al Ballouz was found guilty of the murder of Synthia Bussières and their two sons, five-year-old Eliam and two-year-old Zac, in Brossard, a suburb of Montreal. Following this conviction, Al Ballouz transitioned while in custody and requested to serve their sentence at the Joliette Institution for Women, located northeast of Montreal.
However, the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) has concluded its assessment of Al Ballouz and stated that he will remain incarcerated in a men’s facility to complete his life sentence for second-degree murder. The CSC emphasized that each request for correctional accommodations is evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
