A man from Quebec has recently been found in contempt of court due to his refusal to remove swastikas displayed outside his residence in a municipality he claims to be “the most racist city in the world.”
Earlier this month, a judge from the Quebec Superior Court determined that Yahia Meddah had not complied with the court’s orders to take down the offensive symbols.
The swastikas first appeared on Meddah’s property in St-Barnabé-Sud, a small community with a population of around 1,000, last June following a disagreement with local authorities regarding an inspection of his home. Initially, these symbols were covered after a court injunction was issued. However, they resurfaced in November, accompanied by a disturbing image combining the face of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un with Adolf Hitler, who is depicted giving a Nazi salute.
Despite the court’s issuance of another injunction mandating the removal of these signs, they have remained on display. Alongside this, Meddah has maintained a website outlining his grievances against the municipality.
A hearing for sentencing is set for April 24, where the court may decide to enforce the removal of the signs permanently.
