Rachel Brosnahan Shares Insights on the New Superman Film

Rachel Brosnahan, who takes on the role of Lois Lane in the upcoming Superman film set to release in 2025, has provided exciting details that will resonate with longtime fans of the superhero genre. She has revealed that the new adaptation aims to remain “true to the comics” and will explore the core values associated with Superman, which have defined the character throughout its history.

Speaking at the Critics Choice Awards, Brosnahan shared her thoughts with Deadline regarding the film and its relevance to contemporary issues. Known widely for her acclaimed role in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Brosnahan expressed her optimism about the project, describing DC’s upcoming Superman movie as a “hopeful superhero film”:

“We are currently facing a time filled with turmoil both domestically and globally. There are numerous challenges that people encounter in various parts of the world. Many critiques of superhero films often overlook their foundational messages about human goodness and the potential for kindness among us, highlighting how truth and justice reflect the American ethos, with courage and hope as guiding forces.

I believe this movie encapsulates these ideals, offering a hopeful perspective that aligns closely with its comic book roots. I am thrilled for audiences to experience it and enjoy the journey alongside us.”

Brosnahan also reflected on the significance of portraying such a legendary character within the superhero realm. Throughout the years, Lois Lane has been portrayed by a number of talented actresses, including Kate Bosworth, Amy Adams, Bitsie Tulloch, and the iconic Margot Kidder, who first brought the character to life in 1978’s Superman: The Movie. For Brosnahan, Kidder served as a pivotal inspiration:

“I grew up enamored with the [Richard] Donner Superman films and Chris Reeve’s portrayal, alongside Margot Kidder’s remarkable interpretation. The thought of stepping into this role initially felt daunting, but I am eager to carry on her legacy. The commitment and passion our team has for this project is palpable; it’s a rare and cherished element of filmmaking.”

Rachel Brosnahan’s Vision for a Modern Lois Lane

During the same ceremony, Brosnahan discussed her vision for Lois Lane while conversing with The Hollywood Reporter. She opted against consulting previous actresses who have played Lois, instead aiming to develop a fresh and realistic portrayal by interviewing contemporary journalists for guidance:

“My focus was primarily on the journalism aspect of the character. I reached out to several journalists who provided invaluable insights into the mindset of a modern reporter.

Lois Lane has evolved significantly since her original creation, moving to reflect the characteristics of a modern, determined, and sometimes chaotic journalist. Therefore, I leaned heavily on the experiences shared by the journalists to help shape my interpretation of her.”
