MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow Speaks Out After Joy Reid’s Show Cancellation

Rachel Maddow, a prominent MSNBC host, took to her platform on Monday night to express her discontent regarding the network’s recent decision to cancel Joy Reid’s show, “The ReidOut.” Maddow characterized this move as a “bad mistake” and described the cancellation as “indefensible.”

During her show, Maddow passionately defended Reid and criticized MSNBC for the staff’s requirement to reapply for their jobs, labeling the approach as inappropriate and inefficient. She stated, “It’s not the right way to treat people. It drops the bottom out of whether people think this is a good place to work.”

Maddow opened her segment by sharing that Reid’s departure from the network was profoundly difficult for her. She shared a personal reflection, saying, “In all the jobs I have had, there is no colleague for whom I have had more affection and more respect than Joy Reid.” She emphasized her admiration for Reid and her desire to keep her as a colleague, saying it was a mistake for the network to let her go.

Maddow also highlighted the broader implications of the network’s staffing changes, pointing to the fact that both of MSNBC’s non-white prime-time hosts, including Katie Phang, were losing their shows. She remarked that this trend felt particularly troubling and indefensible, regardless of who might replace them.

Moreover, she drew attention to the potential impact on many behind-the-scenes employees who contribute to the production of the shows. “Dozens of producers and staffers, including some of the most talented individuals in the building are facing being laid off,” she noted. Maddow criticized the network’s decision, underscoring the unnecessary stress and anxiety this creates among the staff, especially during an already challenging time for journalists.

She added, “This is a difficult time in the news business, but it does not need to be this difficult. We want to grow and succeed and reach more people than ever while treating people well.” Maddow stressed the significance of valuing and supporting good colleagues as pivotal to the success of any organization.

While Joy Reid has expressed her sentiments of anger and disappointment regarding the cancellation, she will be leaving the network with mixed emotions. In a heartfelt video shared on social media, Reid reflected on her experiences, stating, “I’ve been through every emotion, from anger, rage, disappointment, hurt… I’m sorry I tried not to cry.”

This cancellation is part of the new strategy under MSNBC’s leadership of Rebecca Kutler, who recently took the reins at the network. Kutler is embarking on a staffing overhaul, seeking to build a robust team of correspondents and enhance the network’s coverage. She has already identified key positions to fill, which includes efforts to attract talent from other renowned news outlets.

Amidst these changes, some MSNBC hosts have received promotions and will be taking on new roles as the network transitions under its new management. The future of MSNBC appears to be in a state of evolution as it seeks to redefine itself in a competitive media landscape.
