Radhika Jones took over the role in 2017 after the legendary Graydon Carter stepped down following 25 years.

Radhika Jones, the editor-in-chief of Vanity Fair, has made an official announcement regarding her departure from Condé Nast, marking the end of an impactful seven-year leadership at the iconic magazine.

Stepping into the role in 2017 following the long-standing tenure of Graydon Carter, Jones informed her team during a recent meeting held at Vanity Fair’s office at One World Trade Center in New York City. While her departure is scheduled for spring, the search for her successor has not yet commenced.

In her farewell announcement shared on Instagram, Jones reflected on her experience at Vanity Fair by posting a nostalgic image from this year’s Oscars Party, stating, “After seven fabulous years, I’m stepping down as editor of Vanity Fair. It’s been an incredible run, with the best team in the business. More to come from me, but for now, I’m just so grateful to my colleagues, and so proud of our accomplishments. Thank you to everyone in the VF universe, from our cover subjects to our party guests to, especially, our loyal readers. It’s been an honor to do this work for you.”

Many prominent figures quickly took to social media to commend Jones for her remarkable contributions during her time at Vanity Fair. Priyanka Chopra expressed her support by stating, “Onwards and upwards Queen,” while Cynthia Erivo expressed gratitude, saying, “Thank you for everything, for believing in me and celebrating at every opportunity!! We miss you already.” John Legend added his praise, noting, “Incredible run. Thank you.”

According to close sources, Jones had been considering her resignation for a considerable period. Her departure emerges during a tumultuous time for the magazine industry, which continues to face challenges such as dwindling readership and reduced advertising revenue.

In her remarks to staff, Jones reflected on the goals she set when she first took on the editor position, sharing, “At the end of every year, I look over the memo I wrote back in 2017 when I was interviewing to be the editor of Vanity Fair, as a way to remember the goals I had and check my progress. Last year, somewhat to my surprise, I realised that—with your help—I had accomplished virtually all of those goals.”

Anna Wintour, Chief Content Officer of Condé Nast and editor of Vogue, lauded Jones in a memo addressing the company. She highlighted a significant achievement from Jones’s time as editor: “Earlier this week, Radhika was describing to me her deep pride at her commission of Amy Sherald’s painting of Breonna Taylor for the September 2020 cover of Vanity Fair, and what a defining cultural moment that had been. And that is exactly what I believe a great editor does – she defines the times.”
