Rangers Aim to Build Momentum Under New Management
As a month has passed since Barry Ferguson and his former Rangers colleagues assumed leadership at Ibrox, the question arises: what changes have taken root in the squad’s dynamics and performance?
The Rangers are set to take the field against Dundee this Saturday, live on Sky Sports, as they seek to capitalize on their unexpected 3-2 triumph over Celtic prior to the international break.
Despite the recent victory, they remain 13 points behind their Old Firm rivals, which places the title aspirations in jeopardy. However, excitement surrounds their upcoming Europa League quarter-final clash against Athletic Bilbao next month.
Ferguson, alongside Neil McCann, Billy Dodds, and Allan McGregor, has formed a coaching team that will lead the club through the remainder of the season. Their primary goal is to salvage as much as possible from the ongoing campaign.
McCann, who transitioned from his role as a Sky Sports pundit back to coaching with Rangers, believes the team’s balance is advantageous. He remarked on the collaborative spirit within the group, highlighting the strengths of each member.
“I’ve worked with Billy at Inverness, and his impact on my career has been significant,” McCann stated. “He possesses a wealth of knowledge about the game and holds strong opinions that contribute positively to our discussions.”
McGregor, returning as the goalkeeping coach, brings invaluable experience and a winning mentality that is essential for instilling confidence among the goalkeepers during training. McCann emphasized the importance of professionals who can share diverse perspectives while coming together to form a cohesive coaching strategy.
“We’re all strong-minded, but in our differences lies strength,” McCann explained. “This adaptability is crucial as we approach each match against varying opponents.” He stressed the significance of adjusting tactics based on in-game situations and being prepared for spontaneous changes during play.
Since the dismissal of Philippe Clement in February, Rangers have revitalized their form, securing victories in three of four Premiership encounters and achieving a notable win over Fenerbahce to progress in the Europa League.
McCann is optimistic about the evolving gameplay style, noting that the team has embraced a quicker approach to transition and penetration. “There’s an observable change in style since our arrival, with more flexibility in our tactics compared to the previous regime,” he stated.
With a history reflecting their dominance, Dundee last secured a victory over Rangers in 2017 when McCann was at the helm. Looking ahead to Saturday’s match, he expressed hope that the trend will continue in favor of Rangers.
“Returning to Dens Park as part of the coaching team is quite surreal for me,” McCann shared. “I had a wonderful experience at Dundee, which shaped my journey in football. While my time there ended with some bitterness, I have come to appreciate the valuable lessons learned, which now inform my coaching philosophy.”
