Rangers Maintain Trust in Manager Philippe Clement Amidst Pressure
Rangers FC continues to show confidence in manager Philippe Clement following a disappointing exit from the Scottish Cup against Queen’s Park, with chief executive Patrick Stewart emphasizing that this decision prioritizes the club’s long-term vision over immediate monetary concerns.
In a recent interview on the club’s official website, Stewart addressed the growing scrutiny surrounding Clement’s future after Rangers’ loss intensified criticism, especially as the team currently trails their rivals, Celtic, by 13 points in the Premiership standings.
In light of reports suggesting advanced discussions of a takeover involving a consortium linked to Paraag Marathe, who presides over the San Francisco 49ers and Leeds United, a spokesperson for Rangers stated, “It is not our policy to comment on speculation. If there were any such discussions, these would remain confidential.” This comment comes as tension builds regarding the club’s management and direction.
Despite the disappointment of the Scottish Cup defeat, Stewart defended Clement’s position, highlighting a successful run to the last 16 of the Europa League as a significant achievement. He pointed out the importance of addressing the wider issues impacting the club, stating, “We have been underperforming for several seasons now and that’s not down to a manager. We have changed the manager and it has not made a difference.”
Stewart elaborated on the need for foundational changes, analogizing the situation to a home repair where one should focus on the structure’s base rather than superficial fixes. He remarked, “Until we sort the root causes, then it’s akin to trying to fix a broken house and starting with the ceiling instead of starting with the foundations.”
While acknowledging the gravity of the recent loss to Queen’s Park, he also stressed the necessity of not jeopardizing ongoing efforts in the Europa League, asserting, “For all that the Queen’s Park result was disastrous, we do also have to give credit to Philippe and the team for the Europa League run. I don’t want to take a step that would put further progress in the Europa League at risk.”
