Ray Nicholson Shares Memorable NBA Story and Channeling His Iconic Father
In a recent appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”, Ray Nicholson, the son of legendary actor Jack Nicholson, recounted a humorous and thrilling experience from a 2010 NBA playoff game involving former basketball star Kevin Garnett.
The 33-year-old actor, known for his performances in “Smile 2” and upcoming films “Novocaine” and “Borderline,” showcased his entertaining storytelling skills while reminiscing about a significant moment during Game 7 of the playoffs between the Lakers and Celtics.
“Game 7, Lakers-Celtics, fourth quarter, tight game, Kevin Garnett,” Nicholson began, seamlessly transitioning into an impression of his father’s distinct voice and style.
He recalled, “My dad always told me, ‘When you’re sitting courtside, watch the play, not the ball.’ At the time, I brushed it off, thinking he was being overprotective.” As he watched the ball make its way towards him, excitement took over: “In my head, I thought, ‘I’m going to touch the ball in Game 7!’ But then, out of the corner of my eye, I noticed Garnett sprinting toward me.”
The show featured a clip of the moment when Garnett, attempting to grasp the ball, accidentally toppled onto Ray Nicholson. Rather than being deterred, the young Nicholson, then just shy of 20 years old, laughed off the incident and expressed his delight at the unexpected encounter.
“You see this? He’s laughing! My own dad is laughing,” Nicholson exclaimed joyfully. He mentioned that Garnett took a moment to check on him. “The man is on top of me shaking me like, ‘You OK? You OK?’ And I’m like, ‘Yes, Mr. Garnett, I’m OK.’”
As Garnett made his mark on the court, Nicholson is poised to make his impact in theaters with two new films releasing this Friday: “Novocaine,” directed by Dan Berk and Robert Olsen, and “Borderline,” produced by Margot Robbie and directed by Jimmy Warden.
