The police watchdog in Manitoba is currently conducting an investigation following an incident where RCMP officers shot a man during a carjacking on Highway 6.
This event took place around midday on Thursday, when law enforcement found a vehicle reported as stolen south of the Pinaymootang First Nation. Police attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the driver refused to comply.
Following a brief chase, the suspect’s vehicle came to a halt. The driver exited the vehicle wielding a firearm and attempted to carjack another stopped car. In response, an officer discharged their weapon, striking the suspect, who nonetheless managed to steal the other vehicle and drive a short distance before ultimately stopping in a ditch.
The individual involved, identified as a 39-year-old man from Thompson, was promptly transported to a hospital where he is being treated for serious injuries.
This incident underscores the ongoing issues related to vehicle thefts and the potential dangers faced by law enforcement during such high-stakes confrontations.
