The concept of the REAL ID has been a topic of discussion for the past two decades. After numerous delays and a fair amount of confusion surrounding its implementation, the deadline is finally approaching.
Effective May 7, 2025, travelers will need to present a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or another approved identification type when passing through airport security for domestic flights or accessing certain federal facilities.
If you’re uncertain whether your current driver’s license meets the new standards, you’re not alone. Many individuals have yet to update their IDs. Continue reading to determine if your identification is compliant and to learn about the necessary steps to acquire a REAL ID if it is not.
What is REAL ID?
A REAL ID is a type of identification issued by states that meets specific security measures as recommended by the 9/11 Commission.
The enactment of the REAL ID Act of 2005 was intended to minimize incidents of identity fraud and improve security protocols. However, the transition to REAL IDs has faced challenges, prompting several delays as states needed time to modernize their identification systems. Although all states had begun issuing REAL IDs by 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic caused additional complications in the rollout.
Is Your Current License Compliant?
Identifying whether your driver’s license is a REAL ID is straightforward.
Check for one of the following symbols in the upper right corner of your ID:
- Gold star
- Black star
- White star in a gold circle
- White star in a black circle
- Gold bear with a white star
If you possess an Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL), which is issued in states such as Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont, and Washington, you can also travel with confidence. The EDL features a U.S. flag and includes the word “Enhanced” at the top of the card.
How to Obtain a REAL ID
Your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is where you can apply for a REAL ID. Requirements can vary by state, but at the very least, you’ll need to provide documentation proving your:
- Full legal name and date of birth (e.g., birth certificate)
- Social security number (e.g., social security card, tax documentation)
- Residency at a specific address (e.g., utility bill, lease agreement)
- Legal immigration status (e.g., passport, birth certificate)
Utilize the Department of Homeland Security’s interactive map to direct you to your state’s ID-issuing authority. From there, you can uncover your state’s unique requirements and locate a place to apply for your REAL ID.
Important Note: With the deadline nearing, many individuals will be trying to obtain their compliant ID, so securing an appointment may become difficult.
Possible Issues at the Airport
Arriving at the airport for a domestic flight without a REAL ID after May 7, 2025, could lead to travel disruptions.
Although the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has indicated a gradual approach to dealing with non-compliance, travelers without an acceptable form of identification will be unable to pass through the standard security checkpoint.
You may face increased screening measures and could receive a warning. In some instances, boarding your flight may not be possible.
Alternatives to the REAL ID
If obtaining a REAL ID isn’t feasible, you may have other forms of valid identification available.
Acceptable alternatives include:
- Enhanced Driver’s Licenses
- Passports or passport cards
- Permanent resident cards
- Global Entry cards
For further assistance, the TSA provides a comprehensive list of acceptable forms of identification on its website.
