The Controversy Surrounding ‘The Iron Claw’
The Iron Claw, a film directed by Sean Durkin and featuring performances from Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White, and Lily James, dives into the complexities of masculinity and the struggles of the renowned Von Erich wrestling family. Released in 2023, the film received significant praise from critics and audiences alike. Nonetheless, Lacey Von Erich, daughter of wrestler Kerry Von Erich (portrayed by Jeremy Allen White), has publicly criticized the film for its misleading representation of her father and their family dynamics.
Lacey Von Erich is set to appear in an upcoming episode of Investigation Discovery’s Hollywood Demons, scheduled to air on April 21. In a preview, Lacey pointed out a notable omission in The Iron Claw: the absence of her father’s wife and children, which she believes strips away a crucial aspect of Kerry’s life and identity. “My sister and I were not in the movie as my dad’s children, and he didn’t have a wife or anything,” she stated, emphasizing this omission diminishes the depth of his character. The film depicts Kerry as a man grappling with the pressure to meet his brothers’ expectations, alongside his eventual motorcycle accident and struggle with painkiller addiction.
Lacey contends that the portrayal fails to capture the essence of who Kerry was as a family man. “And that was a really big part of my dad. So how he was portrayed in the movie is so inaccurate that it was heart-wrenching,” she expressed. Kevin Von Erich, who is depicted by Zac Efron in the film, echoed her sentiments, commenting that the film’s portrayal of Kerry neglects his true role as a family-oriented individual.
Lack of Communication with the Von Erich Family
Typically, when a biographical film is in production, the family of the subject is consulted or informed prior to the film’s announcement. However, Lacey revealed that her family learned about The Iron Claw through social media, much like the general public. Despite these issues, Kevin noted that he had “endorsed” the film, revealing a complicated relationship with its storytelling approach.
Written and directed by Sean Durkin, The Iron Claw was met with strong critical acclaim upon its release, achieving an 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an impressive 94% audience score. According to the film’s official synopsis, it presents “the true story of the inseparable Von Erich brothers, who made history in the intensely competitive world of professional wrestling in the early 1980s. Through tragedy and triumph, under the shadow of their domineering father and coach, the brothers seek larger-than-life immortality on the biggest stage in sports.”
