Rita Moreno Misses Live Appearance Due to Vertigo
Rita Moreno was unable to attend her scheduled appearance on “Everybody’s Live With John Mulaney” this Wednesday due to a recent episode of vertigo, as confirmed by her representatives on Thursday.
According to her spokesperson, “We are happy to report that nothing is serious.” They also mentioned, “She is bummed about missing the show but is on the path to recovery,” as stated in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
The acclaimed star of “West Side Story,” who resides in Berkeley, California, experienced vertigo that prevented her from flying to Los Angeles for the live show, yet her overall health remains stable.
During this week’s episode, John Mulaney addressed Moreno’s absence, explaining to the audience, “Some of you may know we had booked the legendary Rita Moreno for tonight. I’m very sorry to inform you that she can’t be here. We sincerely hope she is doing well. Rita, if you happen to be watching, we look forward to having you on a future episode.”
Tina Fey made a surprise appearance to fill in for Moreno, joining fellow guests Conan O’Brien and Ayo Edebiri, who recently won an Emmy for her performance in “The Bear.”
In a light-hearted exchange, Mulaney playfully inquired, “Have you ever filled in for Rita Moreno before?” to which Fey quipped, “Once, in the movie ‘West Side Story,’ but it goes by so quickly you can’t even tell it’s me.”
Mulaney responded humorously, “You were an infant,” despite Fey’s actual birth occurring nine years after the original film’s 1961 premiere.
Fey candidly shared her own travel challenges, remarking, “I just got off the plane a couple of hours ago, and I’m here feeling sleepy! I keep worrying because this is live, and I occasionally get nosebleeds, and I am almost hoping for one as a dramatic moment.”
Rita Moreno continues to remain active in the entertainment industry, with her recent roles including a part in “Fast X” as the grandmother of Vin Diesel’s character and a recurring role in the NBC sitcom “Lopez vs Lopez.”
“Everybody’s Live With John Mulaney” airs live on Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT on Netflix.
