The Peloponnese: A Rising Star in Retirement Relocation for 2025

The Peloponnese region in Greece has been highlighted as one of six noteworthy retirement locations to consider in 2025, according to International Living. Known for its rich history, stunning coastline, and numerous Blue Flag Beaches, the area is conveniently located just a two-hour drive from Athens. For expatriates, the cost of living in this picturesque region can be surprisingly affordable, with monthly expenses potentially amounting to less than $2,500, alongside rental options starting as low as $320 in some smaller towns.

If you’re contemplating retirement abroad, there are several appealing international locales that may not yet be on your radar.

In late 2024, International Living published its annual list of the top six emerging regions for retirement in 2025. This selection was crafted from insights gathered from a vast network of contributors, all tasked with uncovering hidden gems ripe for international attention. The organization emphasized that these destinations embody essential qualities such as welcoming communities, pleasant climates, and excellent living value, while being on the cusp of broader recognition.

Among the selected locations is the enchanting Peloponnese region of Greece.

Situated at the southernmost part of mainland Greece, the Peloponnese offers a delightful combination of seaside allure and urban charm. Its proximity to Athens, along with an abundance of exceptional Mediterranean beaches, contributes to its appeal.

Spanning roughly 8,320 square miles—slightly smaller than the state of Massachusetts—the Peloponnese is comprised of seven prominent regions: Achaia in the north, Corinthia to the northeast, Argolis in the east, Arcadia at the center, Laconia in the southeast, Messenia in the southwest, and Elis in the west. Contributor Lynn Roulo from International Living notes that the region is particularly distinguished by its unique “three legs,” or peninsulas, each showcasing its own distinct personality and terrain.

This region is home to some of Greece’s most famous ancient landmarks, including the historical sites of Epidaurus and Mycenae. Visitors can explore charming villages and unwind on numerous beautiful beaches, such as the upscale Costa Navarino community. Despite maintaining its rustic beauty, the Peloponnese is increasingly gaining traction as a travel and retirement destination.

What makes the Peloponnese especially attractive for retirees? The cost of living is considerably lower than in many other parts of Europe. International Living suggests that expatriates can enjoy a comfortable lifestyle for under $2,500 a month, depending on personal choices. For instance, renting a 750-square-foot apartment in Kalamata, the region’s second-largest city, can cost around $530 per month. In certain smaller communities, rental prices may drop to as low as $320.

The standout feature of this area is its extensive 1,200-mile coastline, celebrated for its Blue Flag beaches, which emphasize sustainability and environmental conservation.

“Although it’s not an island, the region’s beautiful beaches and coastal towns can compete with those found on Greece’s most renowned islands,” International Living remarked.

In addition to the Peloponnese, other destinations that made it onto International Living’s list include the Azuero Peninsula in Panama, the southern coast of Spain, Montenegro, Northern Portugal, and the southern parts of Costa Rica.
