Boy bands have been a significant part of the music landscape for over five decades, tracing their roots from the Jackson 5 in the 1960s to Menudo and New Edition in the 1980s. The 1990s introduced iconic groups like Boyz II Men, Backstreet Boys, and NSync, evolving into the 2000s with the likes of One Direction, Jonas Brothers, and currently BTS. In a special tribute to these legendary acts, The Masked Singer hosted “Boy Band Night” during its latest episode.

The semi-finalists from Group C took the stage while panelists Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg, Ken Jeong, and Rita Ora analyzed clues in hopes of revealing which celebrities were behind the elaborate costumes. With Nick Cannon leading the entertaining affair on Wednesday, April 2, viewers eagerly anticipated the inevitable unmasking.

Nessy

Rocking the stage was Nessy, who shared insights about his experiences with a particular boy band: “This is so unexpected. I never imagined I’d perform a boy band song, but here I am, fully embracing the theme. Back during the peak of the boy band era, competition was fierce. I was vying with these guys for spots on TRL, chart positions, and CD sales. The band that kept outshining me? ‘NSync. We were always neck-and-neck, and it broke my heart to see them consistently come out on top. So at a celebrity golf tournament, I finally had my chance to settle the rivalry. Unfortunately, I had the worst game and didn’t fare well, but I ended up enjoying drinks with those guys. It hit me that being part of the music scene was what mattered most. Years later, I miss that friendly rivalry, so this one’s for you, ‘NSync. I hope to hear you cover one of my songs soon.”

Nessy performed ‘NSync’s “Tearin’ Up My Heart,” leading to a surprise from Chris Kirkpatrick, who launched merchandise with a heart from a t-shirt cannon. Nessy quipped, “Just like the boys in boy bands, I was also known for my love songs.” The panelists speculated on his identity, guessing Dave Matthews (Rita), Darius Rucker (Jenny), and Pat Monahan from Train (Ken).

Stud Muffin

Following Nessy, Stud Muffin stepped up, eager to share insights into boy band history: “Listen! I’m ready to sprinkle some boy band knowledge on you. Before NKOTB, BSB, and ‘NSync made their mark, it all started with artists like the Temptations and the Four Tops, who paved the way for groups like New Edition and Boyz II Men. While I might not belong to a boy band, I understand the bonds of brotherhood. We grew up and thrived together amidst the competition. Yet, no matter how well things are going, external forces try to disrupt that. At the end of the day, my dedication to my team remains unwavering. Tonight, I’m covering a song for one of my favorites who once wished me a happy birthday, so this is my tribute to them.”

Stud Muffin delivered “Poison” by Bel Biv DeVoe, before Omarion surprised the panel by shooting out a t-shirt with the ingredients for success: a dash of sugar, a sprinkle of flour, and a Grammy of gold. Stud Muffin responded, “All the elements were perfect. I’m really proud of this one.” Panelists guessed he was MC Hammer (Jenny), 2 Chainz (Ken), or Method Man (Rita).

Yorkie

Next to take the stage was Yorkie, who opened up about her experiences: “The golden age of boy bands was unforgettable, but nothing captures attention like a boy band scandal, and trust me, I’ve been at the center of one. As I burst onto the scene, I was celebrated until a major scandal turned my life upside down — paying for someone else’s misdeeds. My private life became fodder for news and gossip, and I found myself under harsh scrutiny. Despite the turmoil, I stayed resilient and held my head high. What I’m proudest of is that I remained true to myself, and when the truth eventually surfaced, I was able to rebuild and move forward stronger than ever.”

Yorkie performed “Step by Step” by New Kids on the Block and tossed a t-shirt reading “Touring Up My Heart” to the panel. She remarked, “My journey has been filled with ups and downs, but right now, it’s really great. I’ve traveled around the world.” Panelists suggested she might be Teresa Giudice (Ken), Paris Hilton (Rita), or Erika Jayne (Jenny).

Mad Scientist Monster

The final performer was Mad Scientist Monster, who shared personal anecdotes reflecting on boy bands: “Everyone loves a charming boy band member, but there’s a deeper connection that goes beyond the surface — at the heart, boy bands thrive on chemistry. I recall the night I met my significant other during a festive fall gathering. As we passed the cranberry sauce, sparks flew, and I knew I was destined to marry her. Seasons changed, and on a hot summer day, we reconnected. I serenaded her until her heart was captivated. I made a promise to be by her side, through thick and thin. Now, here’s a classic boy band song inspired by that vow.”

Mad Scientist Monster belted out “I Swear” by All-4-One, revealing a t-shirt citing the acronyms “BTS” and “BSB.” He concluded, “It’s an honor to have been recognized alongside both the Backstreet Boys and BTS.” Panelists speculated on his identity, suggesting Alan Jackson (Robin), Tim McGraw (Jenny), and Keith Urban (Rita).

The Elimination

After the audience cast their votes, Stud Muffin was the one eliminated from the competition. As he prepared for his reveal, the panel was presented with a “Crack the Case” clue box, which contained a street sign stating “Stud Muffin District.” He humorously quipped, “They even named a street after us — me and my crew.” The panelists made their final guesses: MC Hammer (Jenny), Method Man (Rita), 2 Chainz (Ken), and Method Man (Robin). Eventually, Stud Muffin removed his mask, unveiling himself as Grammy-winning rapper Method Man! The reveal was a success for both Rita and Robin, who correctly identified him.
