Concerns Arise Over FBI Background Check of Pete Hegseth

Senator Jack Reed, the leading Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee, has expressed significant reservations regarding the FBI’s background investigation of Pete Hegseth, who has been nominated by President-elect Trump to head the Pentagon. Reed characterized the review as “insufficient,” particularly because it failed to incorporate allegations made by a woman who accused Hegseth of sexual misconduct in 2017.

During a discussion with Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Roger Wicker, Reed stated, “You and I have both seen the FBI background investigation of Hegseth, and I want to say for the record, the investigation was insufficient, frankly.” His comments highlight the committee’s concerns over the adequacy of the vetting process for high-level nominees.

Reed pointed out that the investigators did not access critical witnesses or financial audits related to Veterans for Freedom, the advocacy group helmed by Hegseth from 2008 to 2010. He drew attention to the organization’s financial situation, revealing that it operated on an annual budget of under $10 million, while Hegseth’s leadership saw expenses consistently surpass revenues, nearly leading to bankruptcy.

Furthermore, Reed referenced reports suggesting that an independent forensic accountant had identified “evidence of gross financial mismanagement” within the group. “There are still FBI obligations to talk to people. They have not had access to the forensic audit, which I referenced, and which the person had access to was quite critical of Mr. Hegseth,” Reed asserted, calling for a more thorough inquiry.

Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, who is a member of the committee, echoed these concerns and has advocated for the inclusion of additional witnesses to provide testimony regarding Hegseth’s background. Warren emphasized the importance of scrutinizing the nominee’s qualifications, stating, “We need to be able to talk to all the people in Hegseth’s background who are raising serious concerns about his fitness to serve.”

The ongoing scrutiny surrounding Hegseth’s nomination and the adequacy of the FBI’s vetting process raises questions about the larger implications for accountability in high-level appointments and the necessity for comprehensive investigations into candidates’ backgrounds.
