Reid Hoffman Ventures into AI-Driven Cancer Research
Reid Hoffman, known for co-founding LinkedIn, became a billionaire with Microsoft’s acquisition of the platform in 2016, valued at $26.2 billion. In addition to his successes with LinkedIn, Hoffman has made lucrative investments in over 80 technology startups such as Airbnb, Groupon, and Flickr. Notably, he profited $111 million from a $37,500 investment in Facebook, showcasing his acumen for recognizing transformative tech.
Hoffman’s latest endeavor is a startup named Manas AI, launched in partnership with Dr. Siddhartha Mukherjee, a noted oncologist and author. With Manas AI, Hoffman aims to leverage artificial intelligence to advance drug discovery processes, particularly with the ambitious goal of contributing toward cancer cures.
By collaborating with leading drug development scientists, Manas AI seeks to enhance their capabilities and expedite the discovery of new medications. The startup focuses prominently on aggressive cancers, including breast cancer, prostate cancer, and lymphoma, aspiring to revolutionize how the pharmaceutical industry approaches drug development.
“Most people have had friends, family members, etc., who’ve died from cancer or had serious cancer problems,” Hoffman articulated in an interview with CNBC. “If we can make a huge difference on this, and this is the kind of thing that AI can make a huge difference in, it’s the kind of reason why AI can be great for humanity.”
Thus far, Manas AI has secured $24.6 million in seed funding, spearheaded by Hoffman and venture capital firm General Catalyst, with operations slated to leverage Microsoft-owned data centers for its AI systems.
Dr. Siddhartha Mukherjee brings a wealth of expertise to the team, being a professor at Columbia University and author of “The Emperor of All Maladies,” which explores cancer’s history and complexities. He co-founded Vor BioPharma in 2016 and Myeloid Therapeutics in 2021, both pioneers in cancer therapy innovations.
Currently, Manas AI is a small team of four, including Hoffman and Mukherjee, who are focused on integrating AI with biological research. Hoffman describes his role as the “AI guy,” while Mukherjee takes on the “bio guy” aspect. They recognize that the synergy between artificial intelligence and biological science is crucial for substantial advancements.
“It isn’t just the best of science and it isn’t just the best of AI, because either of those two [is] insufficient,” Hoffman emphasized in his interview. “You need to put those two together.”
The healthcare AI landscape has been thriving, with significant investments in 2024 alone. According to PitchBook, a total of $10.5 billion was invested across 511 healthcare AI deals last year. Among these, cancer screening AI startup Freenome led fundraising efforts, securing $254 million in Series F funding in February 2024, highlighting the growing interest and financial backing for innovations in combating cancer through technology.
