After an exhausting week, the thought of getting a massage can seem incredibly appealing. However, for many, regular massage sessions are not feasible due to time constraints or financial considerations. As a solution, many individuals are exploring various at-home remedies for alleviating muscle tension. Options like massage guns, foam rollers, and specific stretches have become popular for offering some relief from discomfort. One standout option that has garnered attention is Wavetools’s Glide Cups ($36, amazon.com), which offer an effective method for soothing muscle stress right from your home.

The Wavetools set comprises six silicone cups, a user guide, a carrying case, and a small balm to aid in smooth application on the skin. This comprehensive kit is tailored for easy self-administration of cupping therapy, removing the need for professional appointments.

Cupping therapy involves the application of suction cups to the skin, facilitating improved blood circulation and the separation of connective tissues. This practice is ancient, with some archaeological evidence suggesting its use for over 5,500 years. But how does cupping work, and what advantages does it bring?

Understanding the Benefits of Cupping

“Cupping generates suction, but fundamentally, it’s about lifting,” explains Milica McDowell, MS, DPT, a physical therapist and exercise physiologist. “The cups help elevate your skin from the fascia, leading to a lifting effect on the fascia from the muscles. This creates a vacuum that increases space.” The fascia serves as the connective tissue enveloping and supporting various body organs, including muscles. When in a relaxed state, fascia is agile and fluid. Conversely, it can become rigid and restrict movement when subjected to stress or tightness.

The advantages of cupping can vary depending on its application relative to physical activity. Utilizing cupping prior to exercise can prepare and warm up the muscles effectively. “Applying the cups for a duration of 90 seconds to three minutes to the muscle groups intended for use can enhance blood flow and muscle activation,” Dr. McDowell advises.

Moreover, cupping can be integrated during workouts to stimulate both bodily and cognitive awareness. “You could apply the cups while performing squats,” she suggests. “This not only activates the muscles but also enhances your mental focus on that area, boosting blood circulation. Provided the cups are securely placed and your body maintains warmth, they can remain in place during exercise to facilitate this physical and mental engagement.”
