Insights from Rare John Bonham Interviews

Led Zeppelin, which formed in 1968, produced legendary rock tracks such as “The Immigrant Song,” “Whole Lotta Love,” “Black Dog,” “Houses of the Holy,” “Kashmir,” and “Stairway to Heaven.” While the film primarily focuses on the music, it also aims to offer a deeper understanding of the band’s dynamics. Directors MacMahon and McGourty faced challenges in acquiring archival interviews with Bonham, who passed away at the young age of 32 in 1980.

In a discussion with Vulture, MacMahon detailed the extensive search for Bonham’s recordings. Though some interviews had been found on tape, many were damaged due to repeated overwriting. Their persistence eventually led them to the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia, which uncovered approximately 90 minutes of previously unheard interviews with Bonham from 1971.

“He offered insights that the other band members hadn’t shared,” MacMahon noted. “At one point, he even mentions how difficult it was to book gigs in their home country.” This highlights the band’s initial struggles, as Bonham reflected on their early experiences.

MacMahon emphasized that Bonham’s comments reveal the complex relationships among the band members, remarking, “He states, ‘I’m just getting to know them. I like John, Jimmy is really shy, and I know Robert a bit better.’ Even after their first year together, they are still relatively strangers to one another, emphasizing how much of their journey was centered around their music.”

Becoming Led Zeppelin can be rented on PVOD for $5.99, with a purchase option priced at $19.99.
