Ocasio-Cortez Champions Kamala Harris at Democratic National Convention

During her primetime debut at the Democratic National Convention, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York rallied support for nominee Vice President Kamala Harris, emphasizing the importance of an ambitious agenda for the American people. Her speech on the first night of the convention marked a significant moment compared to her brief 90-second introduction of Sen. Bernie Sanders in 2020.

Ocasio-Cortez highlighted the need for a new direction, declaring, “We choose a new path, and open the door to a new day, one that is for the people and by the people.” She reminded attendees of her working-class origins and the persistent attacks from Republicans who have suggested she return to her bartending roots.

“Since my election, Republicans have mocked me, saying I should go back to bartending,” Ocasio-Cortez stated. “But let me tell you, I’m proud of working for a living. Imagine having leaders in the White House who acknowledge that reality, like Kamala and Tim.” Her words resonated as she framed Harris as a relatable figure who recognizes the everyday struggles of American families.

Ocasio-Cortez characterized Harris as someone who “understands the urgency of rent checks, groceries, and prescriptions,” underscoring the significance of having a leader who embodies the experiences of the middle class. “In Kamala Harris, we have a chance to elect a president who is for the middle class because she is from the middle class,” Ocasio-Cortez asserted, presenting Harris as a beacon of hope for everyday Americans.

The congresswoman took the opportunity to critique former President Donald Trump vigorously, capturing the audience’s attention as she labeled him a “two-bit union buster” who prioritizes personal gain over the welfare of the nation. She remarked, “The truth is, Don, you cannot love your country if you only fight for the wealthy and big business. To love this country is to fight for its people—working people, everyday Americans like bartenders, factory workers, and fast-food cashiers.” Ocasio-Cortez’s remarks not only energized supporters but also framed the upcoming election as a pivotal moment for the working class.

Amidst the enthusiasm for Harris, Ocasio-Cortez also highlighted the vice president’s dedication to international issues, stating that Harris has been “working tirelessly to secure a ceasefire in Gaza and bring hostages home.” This emphasis on Harris’s efforts abroad reinforced the idea that her leadership extends beyond domestic concerns.
