Myles Garrett’s Future with the Cleveland Browns in Question
Myles Garrett appears to be serious about his desire to leave the Cleveland Browns. Following a formal trade request, recent reports indicate that Garrett is not considering a contract extension with the team.
According to Cleveland.com, Garrett and his representatives have “slammed the door” on any ongoing discussions regarding a new contract.
The star defensive end, who was named the 2023 AP Defensive Player of the Year and has earned All-Pro honors four times, expressed earlier this month his desire to play for a team with championship aspirations.
Despite Garrett’s aspirations, Browns general manager Andrew Berry has made it clear that the organization does not intend to trade their star player. “We can’t imagine a situation where not having Myles is best for the Browns,” Berry stated during a recent press conference at the NFL combine.
Coach Kevin Stefanski reinforced this sentiment, emphasizing that Garrett is integral to both the present and future of the team.
Garrett remains under contract for two more seasons after signing a five-year, $125 million extension in 2020, though he currently holds no guaranteed money left on that deal. The Browns are recovering from a disappointing 3-14 season, which marked their worst performance since a winless season in 2017, Garrett’s rookie year. The team’s quarterback, Deshaun Watson, faced significant challenges throughout the 2024 season and suffered a torn Achilles, leading to questions about his availability for 2025 following surgery.
Garrett has participated in the playoffs on two occasions throughout his eight-year career and has consistently delivered impressive performances, achieving double-digit sacks for seven consecutive seasons, including over 14 sacks in each of the last four years.
The developments surrounding Garrett’s future raise significant questions about the direction of the Browns as they look to rebuild and improve following a challenging season.
