Martin Gramatica Reflects on His Journey in New Memoir
In a candid interview with TMZ, retired NFL kicker Martin Gramatica discussed the personal challenges he faced throughout his life, particularly in relation to his upbringing, as he promotes his memoir titled “Beyond The Uprights: The Intimate Memoir Of Martin Gramatica.” Now 49 years old, Gramatica’s story includes both triumphs and tribulations during his decade-long NFL career, which saw him play for four different teams, concluding with the New Orleans Saints in 2008.
Gramatica was open about the difficult relationship he had with his father, describing it as “abusive.” He emphasized that his purpose in sharing these experiences was not to elicit sympathy, but rather to highlight how they shaped him into a more compassionate person and father. “I want to make sure people don’t read the book and say, ‘Feel sorry for me,’ because everything that I lived, it made me a better person and made me a better father,” Gramatica remarked.
During his reflection, Gramatica articulated how his father’s behavior served as a powerful example of how he did not want to interact with his own children. He expressed the importance of breaking the cycle of abuse, stating, “It made me know what not to do with my kids. I want to make sure that if somebody reads the book and realizes, ‘I need to break this,’ and I want somebody to realize it sooner than when I did.” The profound realization came for him with the birth of his first son, Nico.
Nico Gramatica has followed in his father’s footsteps as a placekicker for the South Florida Bulls. This passing down of sporting lineage adds another layer to Martin’s legacy, as he seeks to instill positive values in his children, diverging from the harsh lessons of his youth.
Martin emphasized the importance of his family’s unity in overcoming their shared past, noting an agreement among him and his siblings to avoid repeating their father’s patterns. “I talked to my brothers, and we made a pact. We got to break this,” Martin noted, emphasizing the resolve to shield their families from similar experiences. They have distanced themselves from their father to protect their children from any further harm.
Gramatica’s football resume includes a notable tenure with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he was a key player in their Super Bowl win in 2002. Over his NFL career, he achieved a respectable field goal percentage of 76.4%, showcasing the skill and dedication he brought to the sport.
