Maharashtra Minister Advocates for Strategic Overhaul of ND Studio
Maharashtra’s cultural affairs minister, Ashish Shelar, has called for the engagement of specialized consultants aimed at rejuvenating the ND Studio located in Karjat. This initiative is designed to elevate the studio’s commercial viability and enhance its competitive edge within the cinematic landscape.
Shelar’s remarks came during a recent review meeting held at Mantralaya, where he underscored the importance of developing a comprehensive action plan to modernize the studio, thereby ensuring its ongoing significance in the rapidly evolving entertainment sector.
Attendees of the meeting included Vikas Kharge, principal secretary of the cultural department, alongside senior officials from Film City and ND Studio. The gathering centered on formulating strategies that would position ND Studio as a leading destination for creative professionals, while also maximizing its financial returns and fostering job creation.
Founded in 2005 by renowned art director Nitin Chandrakant Desai, ND Studio has been a notable contributor to the film industry. Despite its success, the studio has faced difficulties, particularly following Desai’s tragic passing in August 2023, which brought attention to his financial challenges.
Known for its opulent sets and high-profile productions, ND Studio has been the setting for numerous hit films, such as ‘Jodhaa Akbar’, ‘Bajirao Mastani’, and ‘Devdas’. The expansive facility offers striking landscapes and advanced infrastructure, making it a sought-after spot for both filmmakers and tourists.
However, the studio has encountered significant hurdles in recent years, including financial instability and stiff competition from modern studios equipped with the latest technologies. This has resulted in concerns over its maintenance, leading to many parts of the studio being under-leveraged.
During the meeting, Shelar emphasized that the revitalization of ND Studio is essential not merely for preserving its historical significance but also for ensuring its future as a dynamic creative venue. He noted, “Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has been a steadfast supporter of Marathi producers, artists, and technicians.” Furthermore, he articulated that the enhancement of the studio with state-of-the-art facilities would establish it as a prime choice for various types of Marathi productions, including films, web series, and content for over-the-top (OTT) platforms.
Shelar also highlighted the need for the modernisation strategy to focus on maximizing job opportunities for local residents. He directed that any unused areas within the studio should be effectively repurposed, alongside adding new attractions to draw more creatives, producers, and tourists.
Overall, Shelar envisions a broader role for ND Studio. By upgrading the facility with contemporary technology and amenities, he is confident that the studio can engage a larger audience, which would not only amplify its usage but also enhance its revenue streams.
A dedicated team of expert consultants will be responsible for drafting a meticulous modernization blueprint. This plan will emphasize both business growth and employment opportunities, while also integrating the latest innovations in digital content production to ensure ND Studio remains relevant and competitive in the dynamic world of entertainment.
