Exploring the Waldorf Astoria Riviera Maya
Waldorf Astoria Riviera Maya
Every room and suite at the resort is designed with a furnished private balcony that features a plunge pool and stunning views of the ocean. A highlight of the expansive 40,000-square-foot spa is its outdoor treatment rooms and large hydrotherapy pool, which incorporate ancient Mayan healing methods into their wellness services. The resort collaborates with a local tour operator to develop personalized guided itineraries that explore nearby attractions, such as the historic town of Valladolid and the Ek’ Balam archaeological site. The pool areas, defined by lush greenery, maintain a terraced layout that ensures unobstructed views of the sea.
As I soak in the vibrant hues of the sunrise, with my feet sinking into the warm sands, I hear a shaman softly reciting words in Mayan. It’s 7 a.m. in Cancun, and our small group, consisting of my mother, a yoga instructor, the shaman, and myself, is immersed in a traditional sun salutation ceremony on a nearly deserted stretch of beautiful white sand.
My mother and I enjoyed a three-day stay at the Waldorf Astoria Riviera Maya, which opened its doors on November 1, 2022. This resort marks the first newly constructed property within the Hilton-owned brand’s offerings in the Caribbean and Latin America, following the acquisition of an existing hotel in Los Cabos in 2019.
“Waldorf Astoria Riviera Maya stands out due to its private beachfront setting, architecture that harmonizes with local mangroves, diverse activities and culinary offerings, and a dedication to personalized service that echoes our brand’s legacy of sophistication,” stated Nazaret Carbonari, the resort’s general manager, in an interview with Travel + Leisure.
While Cancun is often associated with bustling spring break crowds and busy beaches, this resort provides a much calmer environment. Ideally positioned behind a lush mangrove preserve yet only a 15-minute drive from the airport, it offers guests a tranquil escape. Despite the fact that all beaches in Mexico are public, the serene stretch near the hotel experienced minimal foot traffic, allowing us to enjoy what felt like a private beach alongside the expansive swimming pools with ocean views.
The signature sophistication of the Waldorf Astoria brand is apparent throughout the property. The grand lobby boasts an array of chandeliers, elegant seating, marble tables, and natural wooden chairs. The focal point is a luxurious marble clock, adorned with mother-of-pearl and Mayan symbolism, which serves as a gathering place for guests. The design incorporates smaller lounges and intimate areas surrounded by lush greenery and a calming color scheme, ensuring that the hotel’s vast size doesn’t feel overwhelming.
Outdoor areas are designed with a dynamic terraced arrangement featuring palm trees and indigenous plants, providing privacy and a sense of tropical ambiance while also highlighting the natural richness of the Yucatán jungle.
Below, you can find my comprehensive review of the Waldorf Astoria Riviera Maya.
The Rooms
Water-themed elements feature prominently in the hotel’s design. Each of the 173 rooms and suites showcases remarkable ocean views and comes with private balconies equipped with outdoor soaking tubs. The furniture reflects organic shapes, mirroring natural formations, while pearlescent inlays and shimmering patterns evoke the surface of the sparkling sea.
“Utilizing natural sensory stimuli and biophilic design to enhance wellness and connection with nature, the design blends modern lines with repetitive patterns and flowing forms reminiscent of the ocean,” explained Stefano Falbo, vice president and associate principal of SB Architects, who collaborated with HBA and EDSA on the project.
During our stay, my mother and I occupied a deluxe oceanfront guest room spanning 675 square feet, featuring two queen-size beds. The bathroom included double vanities and ample closet space, ensuring we each had room to prepare for the day. A glass-enclosed shower, accessible from the balcony, allowed us to enjoy the fresh air and stunning views while bathing. Our balcony was our sanctuary—we spent hours talking, reading, relishing the vibrant Caribbean scenery, and cooling off in our private plunge pool.
Food and Drink
The resort recently welcomed a new executive chef, Jonathan Santiago, previously of One & Only Palmilla in Los Cabos.
“Our culinary offerings highlight the area’s diverse flavors, with Malpeque’s wood-fired seafood and Ja’o’s sophisticated Mexican cuisine at the forefront,” stated Carbonari.
Guests can choose from five distinct dining venues, including Chaya for breakfast and dinner, known for its inspiring decor, and Ja’o for lunch, where menu highlights include succulent pork tacos with grilled pineapple habanero puree, herb quelite salad with avocado and pink pine nuts, and the flavorful sikil pak dip made from roasted pumpkin seeds and tomatoes.
Seafood lovers will find their paradise at Malpeque. This elegant dining space showcases an open kitchen with a fire grill, where each dish integrates elements of fire, char, or smoke.
We indulged in the catch of the day for two, a beautifully grilled snook from the Gulf of Mexico, marinated in exquisite spices. Although the portion was substantial enough to serve a family of four, my mother and I made a commendable effort to finish it. We complemented the meal with whole grilled cauliflower and glasses of light, fruity Mexican cabernet sauvignon.
Activities and Experiences
While I prioritize the beach and sea during my stays on the Riviera Maya, those preferring a pool experience can find ample space at the two infinity pools, which are complemented by chaise lounges, cabanas, and vibrant greenery. Exceptional pool service means guests can indulge in refreshing cocktails or light dishes without even getting up. For wellness enthusiasts, yoga and Pilates classes, stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, and access to a well-equipped gym are all available.
The exemplary service at the hotel extends beyond its premises, as well. The resort collaborates with a local tour operator to tailor custom adventure itineraries for guests. During one such adventure, a knowledgeable guide accompanied us on a private trip to the Ek’ Balam Mayan archaeological site, followed by a visit to the nearby cenote, Hubiku. There, our guide had arranged sun chairs and catering, creating a private beach club atmosphere. After taking a refreshing dip in the cenote and enjoying a shot of tequila, we concluded our day with lunch and leisure time in the charming colonial town of Valladolid.
The Spa
The incorporation of local culture and Mayan traditions is evident throughout the resort, particularly in the expansive 40,000 square-foot Waldorf Astoria Spa. The spa offers an authentic experience, rooted in the region’s natural beauty and cultural heritage. The sun-drenched lobby features a circular seating area that reflects the cenotes of the Yucatán, complemented by lush landscaping surrounding the 21 treatment rooms and spa pool, with signature treatments inspired by the Ceiba tree.
Omar Sanchez, the spa manager, shared that the ancient Mayans revered the Ceiba tree as a connection point between our world and the underworld through its roots, and between the heavens through its branches. Consequently, my indulgent 80-minute aromatherapy massage, called Yellow Ceiba, commenced at my feet and concluded in the private plunge pool outside my treatment room. Additionally, the spa’s exclusive products include a body lotion featuring Ceiba tree oil.
The hydrotherapy pool is another standout feature, surrounded by lush vegetation—an ideal spot for relaxation between treatments.
Family-Friendly Offerings
While I didn’t partake in family-oriented activities, I would readily bring my six-year-old son for an enjoyable beach retreat. The resort provides a family pool alongside engaging activities like treasure hunts, painting, and cookie-making to keep young guests entertained.
For families with infants, the resort is equipped with cribs, child-friendly toiletries, bottle warmers, bathrobes, and coloring books.
Location
The Waldorf Astoria is conveniently located just 15 minutes from Cancun International Airport, making it a perfect destination for quick getaways (especially for East Coast travelers with direct flights available). While the hotel offers a serene atmosphere, the vibrant nightlife and bustling atmosphere of Cancun are just 17 miles away, accessible via taxi or private transfer, which the concierge can assist in organizing. For those interested in snorkeling excursions, the resort can arrange yacht tours to Isla Mujeres, where whale sharks are sometimes spotted.
Accessibility and Sustainability
The resort has guest accommodations that include roll-in showers, handrails, a handheld shower head, and shower chairs for guests with mobility challenges.
Spanning 237 acres, the resort’s grounds include protected mangrove forests that have been recognized as a “voluntarily conserved area” by the Mexican government. To mitigate the impact on local wildlife during construction, measures such as aerial bridges, underground tunnels, and special crossings were implemented. In addition, the Waldorf Astoria Riviera Maya takes part in Hilton’s “LightStay” sustainability program to track and minimize its environmental footprint, reporting over 343,921 pounds of waste recycled in 2024.
