With the second episode of Time Bandits, it appears some of the concerns raised in my initial review have been addressed, leading to a more cohesive narrative.
Despite this progress, the contrast between Taika Waititi’s contemporary vision and the beloved ’80s film continues to be significant. It is encouraging to observe some elements beginning to coalesce into a more defined storyline.
While it is unlikely that this new series will surpass the charm of the original, the latest episode offers intriguing plot developments worth contemplating as we anticipate Episode 3.
Fortunately, the pacing of this episode has improved, allowing for deeper engagement with the characters and their surroundings. The frenetic energy of the premiere felt scattered, akin to a chaotic animal stumbling into a space filled with distractions.

To provide a balanced assessment, let us begin with the drawbacks.
Comedy is Great Until it Isn’t
Influenced by comedic traditions reminiscent of Monty Python and later, the irreverent humor of the Farrelly brothers, Waititi infuses his style with joyful absurdity. However, a significant concern with Time Bandits is the relentless pace of humor.
This adaptation seems particularly aimed at a younger audience and, while this is commendable, it often comes at the cost of variety in tone.
If the episode featured about 10,000 words of dialogue, nearly all would be marked by a lighthearted frivolity that becomes overwhelming. For instance, a scene where Kevin witnesses the grim aftermath of an incident involving his relatives is jarring; the comedic response that follows leaves little room for the gravity of the situation.
This constant levity can feel surreal and ill-suited to certain moments, and while comedy is a central theme, it doesn’t excuse the absence of emotional depth in such significant scenes.
Previous works from Waititi, like Hunt for the Wilderpeople and What We Do in the Shadows, offer moments of pause that enrich the narrative, making one feel that an excess of humor can dilute its effectiveness.
Characters Are Important
In terms of character development, a comparison can be drawn to What We Do in the Shadows, which expertly balances wacky personas with rich backstories. In Time Bandits, however, the depth of the supporting characters remains largely unexplored.
While some bandits sporadically exhibit empathy towards the protagonist Kevin, their individual narratives are scant, relying heavily on clichéd backstories accessible via a quick online search.
Kevin, with his experience of unsupportive parents and social struggles, resonates more powerfully than the others, showcasing a relatable vulnerability that is otherwise lacking.
Though Widget lacks an elaborate past, his straightforward nature adds a refreshing perspective amidst the backdrop of more complex characters.

Which Brings Us to the Good
Despite my objections to the over-the-top comedic elements in Time Bandits, it’s essential to acknowledge moments of genuine humor that land effectively. Waititi has an undeniable talent for crafting engaging comedic dynamics among the cast.
The characters bring a variety of comedic styles—Penelope offers an effortlessly sharp wit, while Bittelig’s vibrant expressions and Judy’s deadpan humor contribute to an entertaining ensemble. Their interactions convey a strong sense of camaraderie that enhances the viewing experience.
While Alto feels slightly disconnected in this mix, the overall chemistry among the actors is commendable and adds a layer of authenticity to the storytelling.
Time Slows Down for the Time Bandits
In contrast to the relentless pace of the first episode, the second installment shifts to the ancient Maya setting, allowing viewers to absorb the surroundings and the characters’ actions. This thoughtful approach creates a welcome opportunity for narrative development.
The storyline transitions effectively back to the modern era towards the episode’s conclusion, introducing important elements that broaden the scope of the plot. The appearance of key figures like Pure Evil and the Supreme Being adds intrigue and potential for future developments.
The twist involving Pure Evil subverts expectations by altering timelines, while the cliffhanger introduced by the Supreme Being promises further exploration of the character’s motives.
Things Are Looking Up
Having watched the second episode of Time Bandits, there are grounds for optimism regarding the show’s trajectory.
This episode features characters who successfully convey humor and chemistry, fostering a degree of empathy, particularly for Kevin, who stands out in this ensemble.

The storyline’s pacing allows for character growth and plot intricacies that enhance viewer investment. Apple TV+ showcases a thoughtful cinematography style that enriches the experience, providing a greater appreciation of the show’s visual storytelling.

While the overwhelming comedic tone may persist, reflecting Waititi’s distinct approach, the narrative nonetheless holds promise for becoming something more than it initially appears.
Will this new adaptation ever rival the original classic? It’s difficult to assert with certainty.
However, the progress observed by the end of this episode offers a more hopeful outlook.
