Recent years have favored polished styles, including the sleek bun and glamorous blowouts achieved with tools like the Dyson Airwrap. However, a new trend termed “angsty hair” is emerging, infusing the beauty scene with a refreshing dose of boldness and creativity.
“Celebrities are beginning to explore beyond traditional aesthetics, experimenting with vibrant colors and unique shapes,” explains Lacy Bennett, a hair colorist and stylist at LRN Beauty in New York City. “These angsty styles reflect a departure from trends; they’re about expressing authenticity in the moment.” Let’s delve into this beauty phenomenon that breaks away from established norms.
Introducing Angsty Hair
Angsty hair embodies a desire for spontaneity and transformation. It harkens back to earlier styles defined by unconventional elements, including dramatic bangs and vibrant hair color choices that were emblematic of a more rebellious aesthetic.
“In the early 2000s and into the 2010s, angsty hairstyles were often self-styled,” states Bennett. “People were experimenting, which added a fun, albeit sometimes messy, quality to haircuts and color combinations.” Resources might have been limited at the time, yet the creative energy was palpable.
Today, contemporary celebrities are showcasing hairstyles that challenge traditional beauty norms, such as Billie Eilish’s striking jellyfish cut and Chappell Roan’s notable Shakespearean red, both of which make powerful statements on the red carpet.
How to Embrace Angsty Hair
Bennett notes that variations on shag cuts, pixie hairstyles, and layered looks are currently trending, along with nostalgic Tumblr-inspired styles like side bangs and long bob cuts, which have been sported by figures like Keke Palmer and Rihanna. FKA Twigs has also made headlines lately with an innovative fusion of braids and a mohawk during her EUSEXUA tour.
Stylist Tiffanie Richards predicts a rise in shades like smoky lavender, rich merlot, and soft blonde, envisioning a muted twist on the bold hues of the early 2000s. “If the undercut resurfaces, I will happily say I foresaw it,” she adds.
In essence, while angsty hair trends may vary, they share a unifying characteristic: “The most effective angsty cuts defy conventional styling,” asserts Bennett.
If nostalgia for the Tumblr aesthetic stirs excitement for Millennials, it’s worth noting that younger generations are also eagerly embracing these styles. “These trends resurface not only to honor those who experienced them before, but to be revitalized by a new wave of trendsetters,” remarks Christin Brown, a celebrity hairstylist and founder of Full Spiral Salon. “It’s inspiring to see them celebrated and reinterpreted by a fresh, vibrant audience.”
