Candiace Dillard Bassett has publicly expressed her support for former castmate Karen Huger following Huger’s recent DUI sentencing. Candiace emphasized understanding and compassion for the challenges everyone faces, especially in light of Huger’s legal troubles.
During an appearance outside the Better Brothers Los Angeles’ Truth Awards—an event celebrating achievements within the Black LGBTQ+ community, complete with scholarships for LGBTQ+ youth—Candiace shared her thoughts on Karen’s situation.
The crash in question, for which Huger received a one-year prison sentence last month, occurred in March 2024 when she struck a median and various signs. Candiace, reflecting on the incident, noted that she feels “devastated” for both Karen and her family, wishing to remind others that everyone has their struggles.
She acknowledged the need for Huger to address her personal challenges, including the serious nature of drinking and driving. However, Candiace chose not to exacerbate the situation, criticizing the harshness displayed toward Karen on social media. She believes that the public reaction has been unnecessarily cruel.
Candiace commented that she imagines Huger will adapt to the prison environment, possibly using her time there to motivate others. She is hopeful that Karen will emerge from this hardship even stronger.
Although Candiace has not been in touch with Karen since the sentencing, she indicated that they had communicated prior to the court decision, and she is keeping Karen in her thoughts and prayers.
For context, it was reported that after the crash, body camera footage revealed the police questioning Karen at the scene. The Maryland State’s Attorney’s Office explained that in addition to her prison sentence, Karen will face restrictions upon her release, including a year without driving privileges, five years of supervised probation, and financial penalties.
Though the upcoming year will be challenging for Karen Huger, it is reassuring to see that she has at least the support of fellow reality star Candiace Dillard Bassett.
