Notre Dame Advances to College Football Playoff National Championship

In a thrilling contest at the Capital One Orange Bowl, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish secured their spot in the first College Football Playoff National Championship of the expanded format, edging out the Penn State Nittany Lions 27-24. The game culminated with a decisive 41-yard field goal from kicker Mitch Jeter, following a dramatic comeback by the Irish.

Quarterback Riley Leonard’s determination was pivotal in Notre Dame’s victory, particularly after he returned from an injury that forced him out of the game in the second quarter. At that point, Notre Dame was trailing 10-0. Backup quarterback Steve Angeli stepped in and managed to lead a field goal drive, allowing the Irish to go into the locker room at halftime with a score of 10-3.

Head coach Marcus Freeman highlighted Leonard’s competitive spirit during a postgame interview on ESPN. “He’s a competitor and competitors find a way to win,” Freeman remarked. “It’s an honor to be a part of this with him.”

Upon Leonard’s return in the second half, he orchestrated a touchdown drive that tied the game, reigniting the Fighting Irish’s hopes. The rest of the half saw both teams exchanging scores, resulting in an intense and closely contested match.

Despite the pressure, Leonard faced a crucial moment in the final minutes of the game. He attempted to lead a go-ahead drive but faced resistance from Penn State’s defense, which recorded a critical sack on third down, forcing Notre Dame to punt.

On the following possession, Penn State’s quarterback, Drew Allar, aimed to capitalize on the opportunity for a game-winning drive. However, under duress, he threw an interception, handing possession back to Leonard and the Irish.

With renewed hope, Leonard guided his team down the field, setting the stage for Jeter’s game-winning kick. Leonard later shared his mindset during that final drive, stating, “I just trusted in Jesus.” This victory adds to the team’s recent momentum, following a historic win against Georgia in the Sugar Bowl under harrowing circumstances.

The Fighting Irish’s next challenge lies ahead as they prepare to face the winner of the forthcoming Cotton Bowl, which features Ohio State and Texas. As the excitement builds, Notre Dame’s journey towards national glory in college football is just beginning.
