Riot Acknowledges ADC Players’ Dissatisfaction, But Resolving the Issue Is More Complex Than It Appears

ADC Roles in League of Legends Face Challenges

Players assuming the ADC (Attack Damage Carry) role in League of Legends are encountering significant frustrations during their gameplay, largely attributed to various “fundamental problems” that developer Riot Games is actively trying to address in order to enhance player satisfaction across all roles.

The game’s structure consists of five primary roles, each offering distinct advantages and disadvantages. However, it appears that ADCs are currently experiencing some of the most severe difficulties. According to a survey conducted by Riot to gauge player satisfaction, game designer David “Phreak” Turley disclosed that ADCs garnered a “neutral rating,” while other roles enjoyed more favorable ratings. This positions ADCs as one of the less enjoyable roles based on player feedback.

Despite the perception that ADCs are simply underpowered, gameplay analysts, including Phreak, argue that the issues pertain to deeper systemic problems inherent to the role. One of the critical concerns he pointed out is that ADC players are often reliant on their support, creating a unique challenge in terms of synergy and communication. The dual nature of their gameplay experience can make it difficult to coordinate effective strategies with their support players.

In comparison to solo roles like top, jungle, and mid, ADC players frequently find themselves at a disadvantage in terms of experience accumulation, as both they and their support share the benefits of the lane’s experience. Although some teams attempt to address this by utilizing lane swaps during certain drafts, the opposing team can easily mirror these swaps, complicating the strategy further.

To achieve a substantial impact during the mid to late game, ADCs typically require prolonged survival and effective scaling. When they cannot scale effectively, it can lead to feelings of frustration and futility within the role, contributing to a negative gameplay experience.

Phreak also highlighted the limited variety of viable picks within the ADC role. While there are numerous champion options within the meta, they often lack strength unless paired with supportive champions that can complement their deficits. Alternatives such as mages with robust early-game capabilities and self-protective abilities—like Ziggs, Seraphine, and Swain—can offer substantial offensive contributions and disengagement strategies, providing players with more diverse tactical choices.

While a definitive solution to these concerns has yet to be identified, Phreak suggested that one potential approach to alleviate ADC dissatisfaction could involve weakening support champions relative to ADCs. However, this approach could disrupt the existing balance within the bottom lane, as it may compromise the agency of supports. Riot Games is engaged in ongoing discussions to find a viable solution, although details about any forthcoming changes remain undisclosed.

For those struggling with the ADC experience, it’s important to know that Riot is aware of the community’s concerns and is working diligently toward resolutions that aim to improve the overall gameplay experience for all roles.
