Rituparna Sengupta shares her thoughts on collaborating with Sharmila Tagore in Puratawn.
Renowned actress Sharmila Tagore has made a significant return to Bengali cinema after a hiatus of 16 years, featuring in the film Puratawn alongside Rituparna Sengupta. Sengupta recently opened up about her experience working with Tagore, emphasizing how it felt rewarding to share the screen with such an iconic figure. She acknowledged Tagore’s extensive career, reflecting on the diverse experiences—including both triumphs and challenges—she has encountered in the film industry.
Expressing her admiration, Rituparna Sengupta remarked, “I’m very proud to have worked with her because she’s that woman who has actually navigated the highs and lows, the beauties and the uglies of this industry,” during an interview with Filmfare. She highlighted the significant hurdles faced by women in the male-dominated film landscape in Mumbai, crediting Tagore for her pioneering role in female-centric films at a time when male actors predominantly called the shots. Notably, Tagore starred in influential films such as Mausam during that era.
Sengupta further praised Tagore’s incredible ability to balance various aspects of life, noting that even at 80, she effortlessly manages to connect with her grandchildren while overseeing household tasks.
The film Puratawn, directed by Suman Ghosh, poignantly delves into the complicated relationship between a mother, portrayed by Tagore, and her daughter, played by Sengupta. The storyline thoughtfully tackles themes of memory loss due to aging and reflects on the enduring effects of the past. The cast also includes Indraneil Sengupta in a prominent role. The film has garnered positive reviews, with well-wishes from notable personalities, including Kareena Kapoor Khan and Tagore’s daughters, Saba and Soha, as well as filmmaker Imtiaz Ali.
While Puratawn marks Tagore’s return to Bengali cinema, her acting resurgence began with the 2023 series Gulmohar, where she starred alongside Manoj Bajpayee and Amol Palekar. That series was acclaimed and won multiple awards for its casting, performances, and engaging storyline.
