Roadside Attractions has secured the rights to “Bob Trevino Likes It,” a film that has garnered both the SXSW Audience Award and the Grand Jury Award. The movie features prominent performances from Barbie Ferreira and John Leguizamo and will be released in theaters in early 2025, as announced by the distributor on Friday.
Directed and written by Tracie Laymon, the film’s narrative is primarily driven by Laymon’s personal journey in searching for her estranged father through digital means. International sales will be managed by Myriad Pictures.
The cast includes notable talents such as French Stewart, Lauren “Lolo” Spencer, and Rachel Bay Jones, enhancing the film’s rich character tapestry.
The official synopsis describes the story as follows: Lily Trevino (portrayed by Ferreira) often adopts the role of caretaker for individuals like her father, who should be the one providing care. Having faced abandonment by her mother during childhood and subsequently by her father in her twenties, Lily yearns for a true familial bond.
Meanwhile, Bob Trevino (played by Leguizamo) spends countless hours working at a construction firm to support his wife Jeanie’s scrapbooking interests. Over the past decade, the couple has faced numerous challenges, and Bob has prioritized Jeanie’s happiness, often neglecting his own emotional needs and desires for friendships. This cycle begins to shift when he receives an unexpected message from a stranger on Facebook.
The evolving relationship between Lily and Bob proves crucial, providing a foundation for connection and emotional healing for both. Through Bob’s simple yet significant acts of kindness, he helps fill the familial void in Lily’s life, ultimately changing her path. They each come to realize that they deserve extraordinary love, often manifesting through small gestures of kindness.
In a statement to The Wrap, Laymon expressed, “This film is inspired by my journey in discovering chosen family. I found a sense of family again during the making of this film with my remarkable team, and now we find family in every audience member that watches it. We are thrilled to be with Roadside Attractions, an organization that truly understands the significance of human connection through the theatrical experience.”
Co-Presidents Howard Cohen and Eric d’Arbeloff commented, “Tracie Laymon’s heartfelt film showcases the search for family and community in unexpected places, featuring striking performances from Barbie Ferreira and John Leguizamo. We believe it will provide a unique and communal experience for theatergoers.”
Laymon is represented by Verve and Artists First, while Ferreira’s representation includes Aperture Talent Agency, Authentic Talent & Literary Management, Felker Toczek Suddleson Abramson McGinnis Ryan, and Highlight PR.
The acquisition details were coordinated by Co-President Howard Cohen and VP Acquisitions Angel An for Roadside Attractions, alongside Myriad’s Kirk D’Amico and UTA Independent Film Group on behalf of the film’s creators.
