‘Racewalkers’ Set to Premiere at Slamdance Film Festival
A clip from the anticipated sports comedy film ‘Racewalkers’ has been released, showcasing a feature that aims to blend humor with the uplifting spirit of underdog stories. The movie stars Robbie Amell, Phil Moniz, and Kevin Claydon, and is scheduled for its World Premiere on February 21st, 2025, at the Panasonic LUMIX Theater in Los Angeles, as part of the Slamdance Film Festival’s “Unstoppable” section. Tickets and event details can be found through this link: Slamdance 2025.
‘Racewalkers’ is a collaboration between Collective Pictures, Zerotrillion Pictures, and Bobby F. Productions. Under the direction of Kevin Claydon and Phil Moniz, who also take on lead roles, the film features an ensemble cast that includes Robbie Amell, Greg Bryk, Jess Salgueiro, and Italia Ricci. The narrative promises a captivating mix of heart and humor, centering on the lesser-known sport of racewalking.
Phil Moniz, who serves as Director, Executive Producer, Star, and Writer, expressed the film’s intention by stating, “We wanted to make people laugh and tug on a few heartstrings while shining a light on an underdog sport no one really knows—racewalking. We believe in creating stories with heart, and Racewalkers is brimming with it.”
Co-director Kevin Claydon also shared his enthusiasm: “Comedies about little-known sports are a blast—especially when everyone’s wearing four-inch shorts. We’re so proud to premiere at Slamdance 2025 and share this passion project with audiences.”
The storyline of ‘Racewalkers’ follows the journey of Will Lester, portrayed by Phil Moniz, a struggling track coach who comes across Matt Mackenzie, a former pro pitcher depicted by Kevin Claydon. Mackenzie’s unique approach to the sport of racewalking could potentially disrupt the quirky dynamics of the sport, leading to a friendly rivalry with the top competitor, Ched Lester, played by Robbie Amell. This interaction develops into an unexpected friendship that exemplifies the classic underdog narrative.
Robbie Amell, who not only stars in the film but also serves as a producer, emphasized the film’s themes, stating, “The heart and humor in Racewalkers grabbed me right away. This story champions unlikely heroes taking on impossible odds—and we’re excited to share that spirit with festival goers.”
The production team is rounded out by Jeff Chan, Robbie Amell, Alex Paquin, Chris Paré, Evan Landry, and Amanda Pileggi, with executive producers including Alona Metzer, Kevin Claydon, Phil Moniz, Wade Odlum, Brian Huynh, and Adam Randle.
Jeff Chan commented on the project’s essence: “We love supporting projects that bring something authentic yet elevated, and Racewalkers does exactly that. The filmmakers’ natural charm and chemistry ooze through the screen and I think audiences are going to be all in.”
Alex Paquin reflected on Zerotrillion’s involvement, describing ‘Racewalkers’ as “funny, down to earth, scrappy, inspiring, and the perfect movie to launch our film division,” especially in the grassroots atmosphere of Slamdance which celebrates filmmakers.
The film also boasts a talented crew, including Cinematographer Mat Barkley, Editors Simone Smith and Nicholas Wong, Production Designer Peri Greig, Costume Designer Courtney Mitchell, and Sound Designers Steve Moore and Lucas Roveda, with the music scored by Ryan Taubert. The casting was managed by Jenny Lewis CDC, CSA and Sara Kay CDC, CSA.
With its mix of comedy and heartfelt storytelling, ‘Racewalkers’ is poised to appeal to festival audiences and beyond, highlighting the charm and excitement of an unconventional sporting world.
