Robert De Niro to Receive Honorary Palme d’Or at Cannes Film Festival

Renowned actor Robert De Niro is set to be recognized with an honorary Palme d’Or for lifetime achievement during the upcoming Cannes Film Festival. This prestigious accolade will be presented to him at the opening ceremony of the festival, which is scheduled for May 13, 2025. This momentous event comes 14 years after De Niro previously served as jury president at the festival in 2011. Immediately following the ceremony, he will lead a masterclass at the Debussy Theatre.

Expressing his sentiments about the festival, De Niro remarked, “I have such close feelings for Festival de Cannes. Especially now when there’s so much in the world pulling us apart, Cannes brings us together — storytellers, filmmakers, fans, and friends. It’s like coming home.”

A Storied Career

De Niro’s illustrious career took flight with collaborations alongside director Brian De Palma in early films such as “Greetings,” “The Wedding Party,” and “Hi, Mom!” Their partnership would later see them reunite with the acclaimed film “The Untouchables.” The turning point in his career arrived in 1973 with Martin Scorsese’s “Mean Streets,” marking the beginning of an influential alliance that would span decades. This partnership produced several iconic films, including “Taxi Driver,” “Raging Bull,” “Goodfellas,” “Cape Fear,” “Casino,” “The Irishman,” and most recently, “Killers of the Flower Moon.”

In addition to his work with Scorsese, De Niro has assumed memorable roles in a multitude of acclaimed films such as “The Godfather Part II,” “The Deer Hunter,” “Once Upon a Time in America,” and “Heat.”

Recent Projects

Currently, De Niro appears in the film “The Alto Knights,” where he portrays two notorious mob figures, Frank Costello and Vito Genovese. Additionally, he has recently ventured into streaming with his first series, “Zero Day,” available on Netflix.

Contributions Beyond Film

The Cannes announcement highlighted De Niro’s commitment to social issues following the September 11 attacks. In 2002, he co-founded the TriBeCa Film Festival as a means to support New Yorkers in revitalizing their community. His dedication to social causes reflects a deeper facet of his character—championing egalitarian and humanist ideals. De Niro’s filmography often delves into themes of violence within American society, illustrating the dark dimensions of organized crime, political corruption, the aftermath of the Vietnam War, and the powerful influences of the entertainment industry.

The 2025 Cannes Film Festival is scheduled to take place from May 13-24 in France.
