Robert Downey Jr.’s Homes: A Delightful Blend of Whimsy and Surprise

As reported by the Hollywood Reporter, Robert Downey Jr. and his business associate and spouse, Susan Downey, acquired a contemporary residence in Venice, California, for $5.6 million in 2009. This property, which spans 7,500 square feet, was constructed in 2007 and boasts a striking glass exterior, a rooftop deck complete with an infinity pool, and a private home theater. The layout includes a top floor designated for personal living quarters and a lower level that features a spacious 1,600-square-foot art gallery or office. A 2010 feature in Rolling Stone characterized the property as “a concrete modernist aboveground bunker whose main floor resembles a mellow war room.”

The Downeys continue to operate their production efforts from this distinctive three-story home. Robert Downey Jr. has a long-standing connection to Venice; as noted on the archived Venice Beach website, he once resided in an apartment along the boardwalk during the 1990s.

Malibu Estate

In addition to their Venice property, the couple purchased a Malibu estate in 2009 for $13.4 million. This picturesque country-style cottage covers 3,500 square feet and is situated on a sprawling seven-acre lot, which includes pastures, animal enclosures, a tennis court, and a barn that has been converted into a two-bedroom guesthouse.

In 2013, the Downeys commissioned architect Nicolò Bini to create a unique 6,500-square-foot concrete clubhouse at the location. Bini employs a construction technique known as Binishells, involving inflatable neoprene bladders, which are then covered with steel-reinforced concrete, to create domed structures. This distinctive building, positioned next to a kidney-shaped pool, functions as an entertaining space for guests. “We wanted to try something that hadn’t been done before,” Susan explained in an interview with The New York Times, adding, “Plus, we love a character.” Although the clubhouse was completed in 2015, it sat unused for a couple of years until the couple enlisted the help of designer Joe Nahem and architect Ben Goodman to furnish it uniquely. Features include a saltwater aquarium, an intimate breakfast nook behind a retro-style screen, cork flooring, and whimsically rounded windows.

In a discussion with Purist, Downey revealed that the estate has been outfitted with wind turbines and solar-powered water heaters to reduce energy consumption, making it the primary residence for the family.

In 2017, the Los Angeles Times reported that Downey purchased another property in Malibu, acquiring a 3,400-square-foot beach house from the 1970s for $3.8 million. This single-story home features three bedrooms and three bathrooms, along with an expansive great room that opens up to a spacious deck providing stunning ocean views. Additional amenities include a detached garage with a studio, an outdoor kitchen, a putting green, a swimming pool, a cabana, and a fire pit that completes the stone-paved backyard.

Although he still owns this property, it appears that it was acquired for family purposes rather than for his personal use.
