Roblox and Bunka Fashion College Collaborate on Groundbreaking Digital Fashion Initiative
In an innovative move that merges the realms of gaming and fashion, Roblox has partnered with Tokyo’s Bunka Fashion College for a pioneering showcase. This collaboration marks the students’ first foray into the digital marketplace, allowing them to present their graduation collections through both physical designs and digital attire for avatars.
Through the Digital Fashion Program, established in collaboration with Roblox and the Dentsu Group, Bunka offers students the opportunity to engage in digital fashion design alongside traditional garment creation. This initiative enables the students to monetize their creations in an expanded e-commerce environment within the Roblox platform, bridging the gap between the digital and physical worlds of fashion.
The collections crafted by Bunka’s students showcase their individual aesthetics, utilizing Roblox Studio to produce digital apparel that complements their tangible clothing items. This initiative mirrors the earlier efforts of the Parsons School of Design, which introduced its own digital fashion program on Roblox in 2023. Currently, the designs from Bunka’s students are on display in a public exhibition, where users can view and purchase the students’ creations for their in-game avatars.
The accessibility afforded by the Roblox platform has inspired many creators, including student Misato Baba. In an interview with GamesBeat, Baba expressed enthusiasm about the potential for selling virtual fashion: “My dream was to make money by selling fashions for avatars. I’m fascinated by the idea that I don’t need to sew or sell physical goods, don’t have to maintain an inventory, and can deliver my clothes to people all over the world with just a computer. This is what inspired me to take on the challenge of creating on Roblox… Digital fashion is particularly important to me because it allows me to simultaneously reduce waste and become more efficient.”
Bunka Fashion College’s president, Sachiko Aihara, emphasized the importance of this initiative in her statement: “Our goal is to give our students the advantage of being at the forefront of today’s trends where technology is democratizing how fashion is created and worn. The evolving nature of digital connections influences trends and styles in both the virtual and real worlds. We envision future fashion brands as entities that simultaneously engage in sewing and coding, and our graduates are poised to establish sustainable global fashion companies that cater to the preferences of digitally savvy consumers.”
