New Musical “Smash” Set to Debut on Broadway
In a recent appearance on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, director Susan Stroman and performer Robyn Hurder discussed their upcoming musical Smash, which is scheduled to open at the Imperial Theatre on April 10, 2025.
Stroman provided insight into the thematic essence of the musical, stating, “It’s about a group of creatives trying to put on a musical, so the audience gets to see the backstage of what it takes to put on a musical.” She described the production as “very meta,” highlighting the parallels between the narrative and the real-life efforts of the creative team behind the show.
Robyn Hurder, who takes on the challenging role of Marilyn Role, emphasized her dedication to honoring the iconic figure rather than attempting to imitate her. “I never ever wanted to do an impression of her. I wanted to just honor her as best I could with her energy,” she remarked. Hurder noted the daunting nature of the role but found solace in viewing it through a layered lens: “If I look at it as Robyn playing Ivy playing Marilyn, it makes it a little bit easier…”
Stroman further underscored the contemporary relevance of “Smash,” asserting, “It’s definitely a musical for 2025. It is about a group of real people and a real time.” She noted that, unlike many musicals which transport audiences to fantastical worlds, this production will resonate with viewers through its authentic portrayal of real-life challenges and triumphs faced by those in the theater community.
