Roquan Smith Issues Warning After Sideline Confrontation with Chiefs’ Hendershot
Baltimore Ravens linebacker Roquan Smith had some strong words for Kansas City Chiefs tight end Peyton Hendershot following a sideline incident during the NFL season opener on Thursday night at Arrowhead Stadium.
As the Ravens faced the Chiefs, an intense moment unfolded early in the fourth quarter when Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes scrambled for a critical first down. Following the play, Smith made contact with Mahomes as he went to the ground, sparking outrage among the home fans who expected a penalty to be called.

Despite the crowd’s reaction, the referees opted not to throw a flag. Smith, gesturing for the officials to keep the play as a no-call, later remarked that Mahomes “flopped” in an attempt to draw a penalty. “That’s why the referees didn’t call it – it was a great no-call by the ref,” he expressed during the post-game press conference.
However, Smith’s dismissal of the situation seemed to irritate Hendershot, who was inactive for the game and watching from the sidelines. Hendershot was seen shoving Smith, which led to a brief confrontation. “Whoever [number] 88 is, I don’t know who he is, but he better watch himself,” Smith stated, referring to Hendershot’s actions. “He did a little slick push.”
When pressed by reporters for more details about the exchange, Smith confirmed that Hendershot had pushed him and remarked on the tension that ensued. “I have no idea who he is, but I’ll see him when I see him,” he concluded, indicating he wasn’t likely to let the issue slide.
The Chiefs capitalized on the momentum from that drive, with rookie Xavier Worthy scoring on a 35-yard touchdown pass, marking an impressive moment in his NFL debut. Worthy’s touchdown came after Ravens’ coverage broke down, allowing him a clear path to the end zone.
Statistically, Smith had a productive outing, leading the Ravens with seven tackles—including four solo efforts—and recording an interception of Mahomes late in the first half. However, his performance was marred by a horse collar tackle on his first play of the regular season.
Ultimately, the Ravens lost to the reigning Super Bowl champion Chiefs in a heartbreaking fashion, as they had a late chance to tie or win the game. Tight end Isaiah Likely caught what appeared to be a game-winning touchdown, but his foot was just out of bounds, negating the score.
As the Ravens and Chiefs are not division rivals, the two teams won’t face each other again unless they meet in the playoffs, reviving the intensity seen in their recent AFC Championship Game matchup. Smith made it clear that if they do cross paths again, he’s prepared to address his grievances with Hendershot.
