Rosie O’Donnell Reflects on Ellen DeGeneres’ Move Abroad Following Trump’s Election
Rosie O’Donnell recently shared her thoughts on Ellen DeGeneres’ departure from the United States after Donald Trump assumed the presidency. O’Donnell, known for her outspoken political views, expressed surprise at DeGeneres’ decision to leave, as the former talk show host has rarely made political statements in the past.
In an interview with Us Weekly, O’Donnell remarked, “I’ve never really known Ellen to say anything political in her life, so I was surprised to read that she left because of President Trump. That shocked me, actually.” She delineated her own history of political engagement, stating, “I’ve been a political person my whole life, not better or worse, it’s just a different way to be in the world.”
O’Donnell on DeGeneres: No Hard Feelings
Despite recognizing the distance that has grown between them, O’Donnell asserted that she holds no resentment towards DeGeneres. “I was very clear about the reason why I was leaving, and I don’t think it came as a surprise to anyone,” she explained. “We’re not really in each other’s worlds, and it’s been kind of awkward, but you know what? I wish her the best. I wish that she has peace and love in her life and that she is OK.” O’Donnell emphasized that they may differ in views but do not actively oppose one another: “I don’t want to fight against another gay woman… we’re just very different people.”
O’Donnell’s ongoing concern for the LGBTQIA+ community also came to light during her reflections. “I think there’s enough room in the world for all of the gay comedians, and we all need to stick together because gay people are the next group to be threatened,” she stated, highlighting alarming attacks on transgender individuals as indicative of broader societal issues.
Life in Ireland After Trump’s Election
Following Trump’s 2024 election victory, Ellen DeGeneres and her spouse, Portia de Rossi, sold their estate in Montecito, California, and relocated to a farmhouse in the United Kingdom. Meanwhile, O’Donnell, who had already decided to leave the U.S. if Trump were re-elected, made her move to Ireland shortly before his inauguration. She is awaiting citizenship approval in her new home.
“I never thought he would win again,” O’Donnell remarked to The New York Times. “But I said, ‘If he does, I’m going to move,’ and my therapist said, ‘Well, let’s make a real plan.’”
During an appearance on Ireland’s “Late Late Show,” O’Donnell discussed her choice to emigrate, describing it as a necessary step amidst a climate in which she feels that the President has held personal animosity towards her for decades. She stated that Trump often uses her as fodder for his comedic jabs.
Describing her new life in Ireland, O’Donnell expressed gratitude for the welcoming community and excellent education available for her son, Clay. “There’s a great, great school there. And Clay has done very well. They were really welcoming,” she noted. “I love the little town… People are unbearably kind in a way that shocks me every single day.”
