Tragic Collision in Roswell Claims Life of Local Man
On January 22, a 66-year-old man lost his life following a collision involving a police vehicle in Roswell. The incident occurred late Wednesday night, at approximately 9:50 p.m. on North Main Street, as reported by the Roswell Police Department via social media.
According to the police, the officer was responding to an earlier two-vehicle accident, utilizing emergency lights and sirens while traveling southbound on North Main. During this response, a northbound Oldsmobile, driven by Howard Peterson, executed a left turn across the officer’s path. This maneuver led to a collision that transpired between Seventh and Sixth streets.
Mr. Peterson ultimately succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital, whereas the responding officer received medical attention and is anticipated to make a full recovery.
The officer involved in the incident has been a member of the Roswell Police Department for five years. His tenure includes one year as a police service aide, followed by four years as an officer, highlighting his experience in law enforcement.
In light of the incident, an administrative review is underway to assess the circumstances surrounding the officer’s actions during the emergency response. This examination is aimed at ensuring compliance with departmental protocols regarding the operation of emergency vehicles.
Roswell Police Chief Lance Bateman expressed condolences, stating, “The Roswell Police Department sends our thoughts and prayers to the family of Mr. Peterson. This tragic crash will continue to be investigated by our Traffic Division and internally to make sure the officer involved was following department policies and procedures related to emergency operation of his department vehicle.”
