Roy Wood Jr. Skips Tequila on CNN’s New Year’s Special, References Don Lemon
During CNN’s New Year’s special, comedian Roy Wood Jr. humorously declined host Andy Cohen’s offer of a tequila shot, providing a pointed yet comedic reason: “The last Black man to drink on this network got fired,” in reference to the recent departure of former anchor Don Lemon.
Wood expressed his desire for “some stability,” opting instead for water while Cohen engaged fellow guests Michael Ian Black and Amber Ruffin, who visibly enjoyed Wood’s witty commentary. Cohen proceeded to pour tequila for his other guests, adding a lighthearted atmosphere to the celebration.
This moment quickly went viral, with Wood sharing it on social media platform X, saying, “Not gone catch me slippin in the Deuce-Five.”
Don Lemon, who previously co-hosted CNN’s New Year’s celebration, was known for occasionally indulging in drinks during the live broadcast, a practice Wood appeared to be deliberately avoiding. After 17 years with CNN, Lemon’s exit from the network in 2023 was confirmed under contentious circumstances. He revealed on social media that he had learned of his termination from his agent rather than through management, expressing disappointment over not being informed directly.
His departure came as CNN faced challenges with ratings and Lemon’s role on “CNN This Morning” came under scrutiny, partly due to comments that were criticized as misogynistic.
For those interested, the viral moment and Wood’s commentary can be viewed in a post on X.
