Apple’s Foldable iPhone: A New Chapter in Innovation
Apple is reportedly advancing on its venture into the foldable smartphone market with a design that resembles a larger book-style device. After months filled with speculation regarding its design direction, recent insights from analysts and leaks indicate that Apple is leaning towards a book-style format for its first foldable device. Notably, Apple has chosen Samsung as the exclusive supplier for its innovative, nearly crease-free display.
Key details have emerged from a Naver blogger known as ‘yeux1122′, who gathered information from the Chinese microblogging platform Weibo. According to these reports, the forthcoming foldable iPhone will feature a basic hole-punch camera, breaking away from Apple’s standard Face ID biometric technology that has been prevalent across all its models since the launch of the iPhone 16e. Interestingly, Apple appears to be retaining Touch ID for this new model, using fingerprint authentication technology similar to that found in its more budget-friendly iPad models.
Renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo previously echoed this sentiment, asserting that the device is set to retail between $2,000 and $2,500, with production slated to commence in the fourth quarter of 2026. He highlighted that the foldable will boast a 7.8-inch internal display, which is projected to be free of creases, while the cover display will measure 5.5 inches. The foldable device’s thickness is expected to be within the range of 9 to 9.5 mm when closed and 4.5 to 4.8 mm when opened.
Alongside the specifications of the display, this new source reiterates that the cover display will have a resolution of 2,088 x 1,422 pixels, while the inner screen is expected to feature a resolution of 2,713 x 1,920 pixels. These figures align closely with what is currently available on models such as Vivo’s X Fold 3 Pro and Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 6.
As Apple continues to implement Touch ID into its Magic Keyboard’s power buttons on MacBooks and iPads, a similar feature is anticipated for this foldable device. Furthermore, some technologies from the upcoming iPhone 17 Air, rumored to be Apple’s thinnest iPhone at just 5.5 mm thick, may also influence the foldable’s design. Early reports suggest that the foldable will adopt a 4:3 aspect ratio, mirroring the configuration of many Android-based foldable smartphones available on the market today.
