Plasma, a standout performer from Season 16 of RuPaul’s Drag Race, is set to take the spotlight in a new series crafted by Michael Witkes. This 30-minute dramedy, titled Quick Change, centers around Leo (played by Witkes), a 29-year-old Broadway dresser who aspires to break away from behind-the-scenes roles and become the star of the show as the iconic character Mame. The turning point comes when he encounters Feral Lynn Monroe (Plasma) and dives into the vibrant drag scene of New York City, prompting him to leave his job and embrace a new identity as a drag queen.
Following the reception of his successful web series INTERESTED IN, Witkes was inspired to develop this new narrative: “After five years of performing as a drag queen in the city under the name Pink Pancake, I aimed to blend my experiences in drag with filmmaking. While drag is often portrayed in competitive settings in media, I wanted to bring attention to the underground scene where many beloved performers originate. The show resembles THE MARVELOUS MRS MAISEL in that it explores the struggles and triumphs of a dreamer, but with the grit and authenticity reminiscent of GIRLS and the musical dream sequences of SMASH. In an era when queer voices face suppression, this series delves into the sacrifices necessary for achieving success.”
Plasma expressed enthusiasm about her involvement: “QUICK CHANGE embodies a delightful synergy of all the elements that resonate with me as a queer artist: my love for Broadway brilliance, the excitement of New York City’s nightlife, and the passion driving individuals to conquer both realms. It’s a heartfelt narrative that speaks to my multifaceted identity as a performer and as a person. Moreover, collaborating with a friend who understands my essence and writes with that awareness is a truly remarkable experience.”
An exclusive industry reading of the pilot episode of QUICK CHANGE was held on April 28 at Red Eye NY, featuring notable talents such as Plasma (RUPAUL’S DRAG RACE), Olivia Lux (RUPAUL’S DRAG RACE), and Michael Witkes (INTERESTED IN), alongside performers like Ava Sofia Mattox (THE OTHER TWO, INVENTING ANNA, INTERESTED IN) and Samy Figaredo (THE OTHER TWO, TRANSPARENT, INTERESTED IN). Others involved included Terren Wooten Clarke (BOOK OF MORMON), Conor McShane (THE WORST PERSON YOU KNOW), Cooper Howell (CATS: THE JELLICLE BALL), Bonnie Rose (AND JUST LIKE THAT, BLUE BLOODS, POSE), and Daniella Darling (Glam Award Winning Breakthrough Artist).
