MOSCOW (Reuters) – The Kremlin stated on Tuesday that Ukraine has not responded to numerous proposals for direct peace talks from President Vladimir Putin, raising questions about its willingness to participate in a planned three-day ceasefire announced for the upcoming month.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov emphasized that “it was President Putin who repeatedly said that Russia is ready, without any preconditions, to start the negotiations process.” He added, “We have not heard a response from the Kyiv regime so far.”
On Monday, Putin proclaimed a ceasefire scheduled from May 8-10 amid preparations for grand festivities to commemorate the 80th anniversary of victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.
In contrast, Ukraine has expressed skepticism, questioning Moscow’s reluctance to agree to a more extended ceasefire of at least 30 days that would commence immediately.
“We value people’s lives and not parades,” stated President Volodymr Zelenskiy, highlighting a focus on humanitarian concerns over military displays.
Peskov noted it is “very difficult to understand” Ukraine’s intentions regarding the proposed ceasefire.
