Explosion at Russian Weapons Arsenal Triggers Evacuations
MOSCOW (Reuters) – A significant explosion occurred on Tuesday in a Russian town to the east of Moscow, where a weapons depot is situated. The incident, reported by local media and Telegram channels associated with Russia’s security apparatus, led to the evacuation of surrounding villages.
In response to the blast, local government officials declared a state of emergency within the Vladimir region. Unverified footage circulating on Telegram depicted a massive fireball and billowing clouds of smoke rising into the atmosphere following the explosion.
According to the defense ministry, the fire was attributed to a violation of safety protocols, which resulted in the ignition and subsequent detonation of munitions stored in a warehouse.
Initial reports indicate that there were no injuries stemming from the explosion, as stated by the ministry.
Governor Alexander Avdeev of Vladimir confirmed that the explosion took place in the Kirzhach district, where emergency responders were deployed to manage the situation, although he did not specify the exact target of the explosion.
A Telegram channel known as Baza, which closely monitors security developments, indicated that there were a series of at least 10 to 11 explosions, prompting authorities to summon firefighters from neighboring areas to assist in controlling the fire.
The local administration in Kirzhach communicated via Telegram that the evacuation of residents from the villages of Barsovo and Mirniy was in progress as a precautionary measure against further risks.
