In a surprising turn of events, Ruth Chepngetich, the current women’s world-record holder, along with reigning champion Peres Jepchirchir, have both announced their withdrawal from the upcoming London Marathon, according to the event’s organizers.
Chepngetich, who shattered the women’s marathon record in Chicago last year with a remarkable time of 2 hours, 9 minutes, and 56 seconds—making her the first woman to break the 2:10 mark—was eager to surpass her own record in the London race set for April 27. However, she cited mental and physical struggles, stating, “I’m not in the right place mentally or physically to race my best in London and I am therefore withdrawing. I am very sad to miss the race and I hope to be back next year.”
On the other hand, Jepchirchir, who is celebrated for her impressive performance as a three-time marathon major champion and an Olympic gold medalist from the Tokyo Games, has been hindered by an ankle injury. She expressed her disappointment, saying, “I am focused on getting healthy again and hope to return to London again in the future when I’m fully fit.”
In light of these withdrawals, Vivian Cheruiyot, the 2018 marathon champion, has stepped in as a late addition to the lineup, potentially increasing the competition for those who remain in the race.
