Ryan Coogler’s Sinners has significantly impacted the box office in recent weeks, garnering favorable reviews and achieving a solid financial performance. Although the film appears to be well-crafted as it stands, several alternative versions were made during production, including different endings and a distinct post-credits scene.
In a recent interview with GQ, Miles Caton, who portrays Sammie, shared insights about the multiple endings filmed by director Ryan Coogler. The film concludes with Sammie embarking on a musical journey, but several other possible endings did not resonate as intended with the director.
“There were a couple of different scenes that we shot for that moment. Him going back to the church, and him holding the guitar and reflecting on whether to give it up or find another path. I think that was a key decision. It echoes the theme that we are all sinners striving to make better choices daily, a beautifully woven aspect throughout the film,” Caton explained.
“That sequence was shot early in production. Initially, it had Sammie looking to his father after playing in the church. We brainstormed how to create our interpretation of ‘This Little Light of Mine,’ collaborating with composer Ludwig Göransson to fine-tune our sound, particularly using a resonator guitar, which led us to the final piece,” he noted.
‘Sinners’ Has Scored a Big Box Office Win
While Sinners was anticipated to perform decently during its opening weekend, the film, featuring Michael B. Jordan, exceeded projections and secured the top box office position. This success continued into another impressive weekend, bolstered by strong word-of-mouth and a record-breaking CinemaScore rating.
Although the movie did not reach the $200 million mark during its debut weekend, Sinners represents a triumph for modestly budgeted films that may lack the extravagant promotions typical of blockbuster franchises like Marvel, yet manage to receive acclaim and yield substantial profits. In recent years, successes like Sinners have become increasingly common, contributing to a new foundation for cinemas that many larger studio offerings are currently unable to provide.
