Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy has shared compelling insights regarding an upcoming film within the Star Wars franchise currently under development. Directed by Deadpool and Wolverine filmmaker Shawn Levy and featuring Academy Award nominee Ryan Gosling in a leading role, this new project aims to take a different approach compared to recent entries, particularly the Disney sequel trilogy.
So, what sets this film apart? For starters, it will not hinge on nostalgia as its primary theme. Instead of revisiting familiar characters and storylines, Levy’s film will introduce a fresh narrative set approximately “five or six years” after the events of The Rise of Skywalker, focusing primarily on original characters while allowing some opportunities for reintroducing characters from the sequel saga.
In discussing the project, Kennedy emphasized, “That’s also in the future. It’s all post [the first] nine. Shawn’s is a standalone Star Wars story that’ll take place post nine, maybe five or six years out. The Mandalorian really stands on its own because we’re dealing with a whole other era in the New Republic. We have other development going on in that space as well. So that’s the area we’re concentrating on at the moment.”
Has ‘Star Wars’ Become Too Reliant on Nostalgia?
The latest film’s attempt to shift away from relying on nostalgia is particularly noteworthy given the mixed reactions to the sequel trilogy. While the reappearance of iconic characters like Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, and Leia Organa generated significant excitement among fans, there were concerns that by the time The Rise of Skywalker was released, the saga had succumbed to the burden of its nostalgic elements, with clunky plotlines like “Somehow, Palpatine returned…” raising eyebrows.
Levy’s focus on crafting a narrative that feels distinct from nostalgia-laden previous installments is refreshing, especially considering that many of his past projects, such as Stranger Things and The Adam Project, have heavily relied on nostalgic tropes. However, the potential inclusion of characters from the sequel trilogy may still evoke nostalgia, leaving some to wonder if the new film will truly break away from the familiar. Some fans remain skeptical and will reserve their judgment until they see the film for themselves.
In other news, Kathleen Kennedy also addressed speculation regarding her future at Lucasfilm, firmly stating, “The truth is, and I want to just say loud and clear, I am not retiring. I will never retire from movies. I will die making movies. That is the first thing that’s important to say. I am not retiring.”
